Elements of the fantastic in the “Disappearance” trilogy by Abe Kobo

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na výskyt fantaskních prvků v románech Písečná žena, Tvář toho druhého a Spálená mapa autora Abe Kóbóa, které tvoří tematický celek také nazývaný trilogií „Zmizení“. Ačkoli tato tři díla představují jistý odklon od Abeho standardní vědeckofantastické tvorby, práce se pokusí dokázat, že se i v nich vyskytují pro Abeho typické prvky spojované s fantastickou literaturou, třebaže čte-náři nemusejí být na první pohled patrné. Toho chce dosáhnout obsahovou analýzou daných děl s využitím teoretické literatury zabývající se fantastikou a Abeho tvorbou.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the occurrence of fantastic elements in the novels The Woman in the Dunes, The Face of Another and The Ruined Map by the author Abe Kōbō, which form a thematic unit called the “Disappearance” trilogy. While these three works represent a certain departure from Abe’s standard science fictional crea-tive approach, the thesis will attempt to prove that they also contain elements asso-ciated with fantastic literature typical for Abe, even though they may not be immedi-ately noticeable for the reader. The thesis aims to achieve this by analysing the con-tent of the select novels and incorporating findings from theoretical literature fo-cused on fantasy and on Abe’s works.
