Podcasting as a Tool for Transformation of Czech Radio in the Individualized Media Consumption Era

Abstract:

Tato práce pojednává o změnách v mediálním prostředí v souvislosti s digitalizací. Zaměřuje se na audio média a na fenomén podcastingu. Předmětem výzkumu je Český rozhlas. Práce zkoumá, jakým způsobem Český rozhlas na podcasting pohlíží, jakou má ve veřejnoprávním médiu pozici a jak Český rozhlas vnímá svou pozici na trhu s digitálním audio obsahem. Dále identifikuje změny, které podcasting médiu přinesl a zjišťuje, jak je změn dosahováno. Metodou sběru dat je kvalitativní polostrukturovaný rozhovor s respondenty, kteří pracují ve zkoumané instituci na manažerských pozicích a s jedním respondentem, který není součástí managementu. Metodou analýzy dat je tematická analýza. Český rozhlas prošel proměnou z veřejnoprávního vysílatele na médium veřejné služby, tedy multimediálního tvůrce. Podcasting jako nástroj této proměny slouží médiu jako důležitý prostředek distribuce obsahu ke skupinám posluchačů s měnícími se návyky mediální spotřeby. Vedení instituce se podařilo zavést v souvislosti s podcastingem změny na několika úrovních. Podcasting se stal rovným lineárnímu vysílání.

Abstract:

This thesis is written on changes in media environment in relation to digitalization. It focuses on audio media and the phenomenon of podcasting. The researched subject is Czech Radio. The thesis examines how Czech radio views podcasting, what is its position in the public service medium and how Czech Radio perceives its position on the digital media content market. Furthermore, the research identifies changes which were brought to the medium by podcasting and examines how the changes are being achieved. The method of data collection is qualitative semi-structured interview with respondents who work as managers in the studied institution and with one respondent who is not a part of the management. The method of data analysis is thematic analysis. Czech Radio went through a change from public service broadcaster to public service medium, put another way, a producer of multimedia content. Podcasting as a tool in this transformation is used as means of content distribution. It reaches the audience whose media consumption habits are changing. In relation to podcasting, the management has successfully adopted changes on several levels. Podcasting has become equal to linear broadcasting.
