The Effects of Reading Methodology Applied on Elementary Level of Education in the Czech Republik on Development of Reading Habits and Attitude to Libraries

Abstract:

Souběžně s výukou čtení a literatury na prvním stupni základních škol v České republice si děti utvářejí také vztah k četbě jako zájmové činnosti. Způsob, jakým jsou hodiny čtení a literatury vedeny, může zásadně přispět k rozvoji dětského čtenářství, ale také může dětské čtenářství poškozovat. Vhodný přístup ze strany pedagoga a používané výukové metody mají při vytváření čtenářských návyků zásadní význam. Charakter čítanek se v průběhu času měnil, stejně jako metodika výuky čtení a její cíle. S tím se měnilo také působení školní výuky na dětského čtenáře. Neopomenutelný vliv na čtenářství může mít také způsob doporučování povinné četby a povaha vztahu základní školy a veřejné knihovny. Při snaze budovat čtenářské kompetence v prostředí školy také nikdy nesmí scházet objektivní pohled na stav dětského čtenářství a nesmí být podceňována důležitost orientace v dalších faktorech, které mohou mít na čtenářství vliv.

Abstract:

Concurrently with teaching approach to reading and literature on the elementary level in the Czech Republic, children can be also be helped with forming an attitude to reading as a special interest activity. Reading and literature classes can be managed so that they meaningfully contribute to development of good reading habits in children or otherwise, they may stifle their interest in this activity. The teacher’s appropriate approach to reading and application of suitable methods can make a fundamental difference in the formation of children’s reading habits. The characteristics of textbooks have changed over time, and so has the methodology and the objectives of reading classes. These changes have had impact of young readers, of course, whereby the role of recommended literature, the very selection thereof, and general attitude to public libraries are not to be omitted. The building-up of reading proficiency in the school environment must not lose the need for an objective perspective of children’s reading habits or underestimate the importance of other factors that have influence on reading habits.
