People with disabilities, their participation regarding media content and their news media representation (overview)

Abstract:

Diplomová práce je systematickou přehledovou statí a věnuje se studiím, které se zabývají lidmi s postižením a jejich vztahem ke zpravodajským médiím – jak jsou v nich reprezentováni, jak na jejich obsahu participují, případně i jak pro ně jsou, nebo nejsou dostupné. Analýza zahrnuje 19 vybraných studií a zkoumá, jakými tématy se práce v této oblasti zabývají, jaké poznatky o lidech s postižením a jejich vztahu ke zpravodajským médiím přinášejí, i která témata ve studiích naopak chybějí. Diplomová práce dospívá k závěru, že výzkumy nejčastěji poukazovaly na spíše negativní zobrazování lidí s postižením a upozorňovaly na stále omezenou dostupnost zpravodajských médií pro lidi s některými typy postižení. Velmi málo se analyzované studie naopak věnovaly vlivu nových digitálních technologií a sociálních sítí.

Abstract:

The thesis is an overview essay focused on articles dealing with people with disabilities in relation to news media – how does their representation look like, how do they participace in their contents, or how the media are, or are not, accessible for them. The analysis includes 19 articles and examines which topics are subjects of their research, what findings are presented about people with disabilities and their relationship to news media, and which topics are not included at all. The thesis concludes that the research articles most often showed a rather negative representation of people with disabilities, and pointed out that the accessibility to some news media for people with certain types of disabilities is still, in some ways, limited. On the other hand, the articles did not sufficiently focus on the influence of new digital media and social networks.
