Edgar Allan Poe and George Lippard: Beyond the Entertainer and the Social Critic

Anotace:

Tato magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá pracemi dvou amerických spisovatelů z devatenáctého století, Edgara Allana Poea a George Lipparda. Tato díla jsou jmenovitě Poeovy povídky „Metzengerstein,“ „King Pest the First“ („Král mor“) a Lippardův román The Quaker City, or The Monks of Monk Hall. Zatímco první zmiňovaný je často považován za autora děsivých krátkých povídek, jejichž jediným záměrem je pobavit čtenáře, ten druhý je uznáván mnoha kritiky jako důležitý kritik tehdejší společnosti. Účelem této práce je zpochybnit tento konsenzus, zaměřit se na Lippardovu kritiku a její chyby, a dokázat, že Poeovy povídky nejsou povrchní a obsahují propracované postavy. Tato práce se skládá z devíti kapitol, s první úvodní kapitolou, která slouží jako úvod a seznamuje čtenáře s tématem. Druhá kapitola poskytuje čtenářům přehled o osobním i profesním životě těchto autorů. Třetí kapitola pojednává o odezvách, jakých se autorům dostalo jak ve své době, tak i od novodobých kritiků. Dále následuje začátek hlavní části této diplomové práce, a to analytická část. Tato část začíná s analýzou Lippardovy knihy, která se zabývá na její kritiku společnosti a případné chyby v této kritice. Tyto nedostatky dokazují, že Lippard nebyl tak důležitým kritikem, jak si někteří literární kritici mysleli. Následuje analýza Poeových povídek. Jsou zde nejen témata, která sloužila jako inspirace pro Lippardovu knihu, ale taky mnohé další. Výsledkem této analýzy je důkaz toho, že Poeovy povídky nejsou jen prostředky k pobavení svých čtenářů. Jsou to díla obsahující alegorie a psychologicky vypracované postavy, které společně se sofistikovaným anglickým jazykem učinily z Poea spisovatele, který se dodnes čte a studuje po celém světě, na rozdíl od Lipparda, který většinou zůstal zapomenut.

Abstract:

This Master’s diploma thesis is dealing with the works of two American nineteenth century writers, Edgar Allan Poe and George Lippard. The works are Poe’s “Metzengerstein,” “King Pest the First” and Lippard’s novel The Quaker City, or The Monks of Monk Hall. While the first mentioned is often referred to as the horror writer of short stories with the intention to entertain, the latter is considered to be an eminent social critic. The aim of the thesis is to question this consensus, to closely look at Lippard’s criticism and to prove that Poe’s tales are not shallow and include elaborate characters. The thesis is composed of nine chapters, with the first one introducing the topic of the thesis. The second chapter introduces the personal background of the writers to the readers. Chapter three examines the critical responses to the tales of Edgar Allan Poe and George Lippard. In the beginning, there is a body of work for each of the author, following by a discussion about the critical feedbacks by both their contemporaries and present-day critics. Following is the beginning of the main part of the thesis; the analyses. It begins with an analysis of Lippard’s novel, focusing on the social criticism and commenting on its weaknesses, proving that Lippard might have not been as great of a social critic, as some literary critics might consider him to be. The next chapter deals with Poe’s tales. Beside the themes that served as inspiration for Lippard’s book, other important themes are mentioned. As a result, it becomes apparent that Poe’s tales are not only horror stories serving as entertainment, but they also contain allegories and elaborate psychological characters, which is something that, together with the sophisticated language, made Poe canonical writer, unlike Lippard, who remained mostly forgotten.
