Gorbachev´s Reforms and the Collapse of the Soviet Union

Abstract:

Magisterská diplomová práce má za úkol analyzovat Gorbačovovu politiku a vliv jím představených reforem na rozpad SSSR. Součástí cíle je také zkoumat, proč se rozhodl danou politickou linii prosazovat a jaké byly její výsledky. Kromě toho má text za úkol sledovat politické, ekonomické, sociálně-ideologické a zahraničně-politické faktory, které zapříčinily zhroucení sovětského impéria. Práce staví na předpokladu, že právě Gorbačovova politika a jeho rozhodnutí se ukázaly jako rozhodující příčina a katalyzátor zániku Sovětského svazu. Gorbačovova politika perestrojky vedla k hospodářskému rozvratu země, glasnosť a demokratizace zase k oživení národnostních nepokojů a k podkopání vlivu KSSS. V zahraniční politice nové myšlení umožnilo rozpad východního bloku, což posloužilo jako pozdější inspirace pro odtržení států v Sovětském svazu. Práce je členěna do pěti kapitol. První se zaměřuje na názory oborníků, kteří vysvětlují důvody způsobující zánik velkých říší. Kromě toho se zabývá koncepty objasňujícími zánik Sovětského svazu. Druhá kapitola se věnuje Gorbačovovým vnitřním reformám v období let 1985-1989, přičemž popisuje a analyzuje perestrojku,glasnosť a demokratizaci. Třetí pasáž se soustředí na zahraniční politiku Sovětského svazu a na Gorbačovovo nové politické myšlení. Čtvrtá sekce se zabývá národnostními problémy v Sovětském svazu od druhé poloviny 80. let a Gorbačovovým přístupem k řešením tehdejší situace. Poslední kapitola sleduje rozpad Sovětského svazu v období posledních dvou let jeho existence, přičemž analyzuje pokusy o poslední hospodářskou reformu a Gorbačovovo vyjednávání nové svazové smlouvy. Pojednává také o srpnovém puči v roce 1991

Abstract:

This Master thesis has an aim to analyze Gorbachev's politics and an influence of his introduced reforms on the collapse of the USSR. The part of this aim is also to examine why he decided to pursue his political line and what were its results. Besides that, this Master thesis has as its task to follow political, economical, socio-ideological and foreign-political factors, which caused the breakdown of the Soviet empire. The work is based on the premise that Gorbachev´s politics and his decisions had showed as a decisive cause and a catalyst of the demise of the Soviet Union.Gorbachev's politics of perestroika conduced to breakdown of the state, glasnost and democratization contributed to awakening of nationalistic discontent and undermined the influence of the CPSU. In the foreign policy the new thinking allowed the disintegration of the Eastern bloc, which later served as an inspiration for the separation of states in the Soviet Union. The work is divided into five chapters. The first focuses on the specialists' opinions, who explain the causes which are leading to the demise of the great empires. Besides that, this chapter deals with concepts explaining the collapse of the Soviet Union. The second chapter is devoted to Gorbachev's inner reforms in period 1985-1989, whereas describes and analyzes perestroika, glasnost and democratization. The third passage concentrates on the foreign policy of the Soviet Union and the Gorbachev's new political thinking. The fourth section deals with national problems in the Soviet Union from the second half of eighties and Gorbachev's approach to the resolution of the situation of that time. The last chapter follows the breakup of the Soviet Union in the period of the last two years of its existence, whereas analyses attempts for last economic reforms and Gorbachev's negotiating of the new Union Treaty. It also concerns the August coup in 1991
