Comparison of British and Czech national populism in the shadow of Brexit

Abstract:

Obsahem této diplomové práce je pokusit se odpovědět na otázku, jak populismus jako politická technika nabourává tradiční západní liberální demokracie i mladé demokracie na východě po pádu železné opony. Je populismus deviace demokracie či její nutná nevyhnutelná součást? Do jaké míry je kontrapozice elit a lidu oprávněná a kde se stává umělou konstrukcí k dosažení moci? To jsou otázky, na které budu hledat odpovědi. Dále budu rozebírat otázku polarizace společnosti a vlivu masových a sociálních médií na ní. Práce analyzuje nacionální populismus v konfrontaci s teoriemi demokracie a teoriemi nacionalismu, s přihlédnutím k nacionálnímu populismu ve Velké Británii projeveném v události brexitu a srovnání s nacionálním populismem v České republice. Práce bude opřena o odbornou filosofickou literaturu literární kritiky a diskurzivní metodu a doplněna bude o výroky politiků ve veřejném prostoru ve smyslu ideální typologie.

Abstract:

The content of this thesis is to try to answer the question of how populism as a political technique undermines traditional Western liberal democracies as well as young democracies in the East after the fall of the Iron Curtain. Is populism a deviation of democracy or a necessary and inevitable part of it? To what extent is the opposition of elites and the people justified and where does it become an artificial construct to achieve power? These are the questions I will seek answers to. Therefore, I will analyze the question of the polarization of society and the influence of mass and social media on it. The work analyzes national populism in confrontation with theories of democracy and theories of nationalism, taking into account national populism in Great Britain manifested in the event of Brexit and comparison with national populism in the Czech Republic. The work will be based on the professional philosophical literature of literary criticism and the discursive method and statements of politicians in the public space in the sense of an ideal typology.
