How do fathers evaluate their presence at the birth of their child in retrospect

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá přítomností mužů u porodu. Přesněji se zaměřuje na pohled a zhodnocení zkušeností otců, kteří byli přítomni u porodu svého dítěte. V teoretické části práce je stručně nastíněn historický a právní kontext této problematiky, dále je teorie rozdělena na 3 hlavní části – těhotenství a s ním spojené předporodní období, období samotného porodu a poporodní období. Každá část obsahuje příslušné podkapitoly. Kromě potřeb žen v každém z jednotlivých období a s nimi spojená role jejich partnera, je pozornost věnována také psychologickým aspektům přítomnosti mužů u porodu, jako je motivace k účasti či jeho prožívání. Práce shrnuje také přínosy a negativa přítomnosti mužů u porodu, přístup zdravotníků nebo problematiku sexuality po porodu. Empirická část je tvořena kvalitativním výzkumem, který se zaměřuje na aktivitu a prožívání otců v období těhotenství, během porodu a po porodu. Informace a data byla získána pomocí polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s pěti muži. Výsledky komplexně zachycují zkušenosti těchto mužů plynoucí z jejich účasti u porodu.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the presence of men at the birth of their child. More specifically, it focuses on how fathers, who were present at the birth of their child, view and evaluate their experience. The theoretical part gives a brief outline of the historical and legal context of this issue. The theory is also divided into 3 main parts – pregnancy and the associated prenatal period, the birth itself and the postnatal period. Each part contains relevant subchapters. In addition to women's needs in each of the different periods and the associated role of their partner, attention is also paid to the psychological aspects of men's presence at childbirth, such as motivation to attend or the way they experience it. This thesis also summarises the benefits and negatives of men being present at birth, the attitudes of health care professionals and the issue of sexuality after childbirth. The practical part consists of qualitative research, which is focused on fathers' activity and experiences during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum. Information and data were collected through semi-structured interviews with five men. The results capture holistically the experiences of these men as a result of their participation in childbirth.
