Gender representation and inequality in music industry in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Hlavním tématem této bakalářské práce je vnímání pozice ženských interpretek na české hudební scéně, konkrétně zda se v tomto prostředí potýkají s mužskou dominancí, objektivizací a genderovou stereotypizací. V teoretické části práce uvádím základní pojmy jako gender a feminismus, jehož vývoj zasazuji do historického kontextu. Vymezuji svou práci vzhledem k feministické antropologii a věnuji se feministické teorii v rámci populární kultury, posilující objektivizaci ženy v hudbě. Dále v práci identifikuji překážky jako steretypizace, objektivizace, sexismus a mužská dominance, se kterými se ženy v hudebním průmyslu setkávají. Následně zmiňuji iniciativy řešící genderovou nerovnost v hudbě působící v České republice. V praktické části se věnuji intepretaci polostrukturovaných rozhovorů, které jsem dělala s osmi českými hudebnicemi aktivními na české hudební scéně. Především jsem se snažila zjistit, zda tyto interpretky zažívají genderovou nerovnost a konkrétně v jakých aspektech.

Abstract:

The main topic of this bachelor's thesis is the perception of the position of female performers on the Czech music scene, specifically whether they face male dominance, objectification and gender stereotypes in this environment. In the theoretical part of the thesis, I present basic concepts such as gender and feminism, which development I place in a historical context. I define my work with relation to feminist anthropology and deal with feminist theory within popular culture, strengthening the objectification of women in music, and mention the Riot Grrrl movement. Furthermore, in the work I identify obstacles for instance stereotyping, objectification and sexism and male dominance, which women face in the music industry. I also mention initiatives addressing gender inequality in music in the Czech Republic. In the practical part I deal with the interpretation of semi-structured interviews that I did with eight Czech musicians active on the Czech music scene. Above all, I tried to find out whether these performers experience gender inequality or not and specifically in what aspects.
