The Modern and the Contemporary Catholic Sacral Buildings From the Point of View of their Religious-Aesthetic Suitability

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá katolickou sakrální architekturou, její technickou, estetickou a uměleckou stránkou v historii i dnes po výnosech II. vatikánského koncilu. Sleduje vývoj architektury moderní od jejího zrodu ve 20. století a její současnou podobu a tvarosloví, které je v dnešním stavitelství majoritní, a bylo adoptováno také architekturou sakrální. Koncepty jako minimalismus, strohost, prázdnota, odhmotnění a čistota jsou příbuzné jak modernímu stylu, tak i některým středověkým a žebravým mnišským řádům, které brojí za chudobu a nápravu církve. V práci si budeme zodpovídat dotaz, jaký je rozdíl mezi pojetím těchto konceptů v architektuře moderní a architektuře mendikantů a jiných řádů. Hlavním cílem práce bude diskuze nad tím, zdali je současná architektura odmítající ornament, klasické tvarosloví a figurální umění se svými pokročilými stavebními technikami i moderním architektonickým vzdělávacím systémem vhodná a přiměřená jak funkčně, tak esteticky pro chrám boží a pro věřícího účastnícího se společného slavení bohoslužby.

Abstract:

This work will address Catholic sacred architecture by focusing on its technical, aesthetic, and artistic aspects both in the past and in the present, situated after the decrees of the II. Vatican Council. My thesis follows the development of modern architecture from its inception in the 20 century to its present form and morphology, the dominant one in today’s architecture, and how it was incorporated also into sacred architecture. Concepts such as minimalism, austerity, emptiness, dematerialization, and purity are connected to the modern style as well as to some medieval and mendicant orders, the goals of which are the Church’s and individual poverty and spiritual correction. In this work we will find the answer to the question of difference and similarity of elements and outcomes for these concepts throughout history. The main goal of my thesis will be to discuss whether contemporary architecture rejecting ornament, classical morphology and figural art, with its advanced construction techniques and modern education system is suitable and adequate both functionally and aesthetically for the temple of God and for believers participating in worship.
