Political persistence of candidates in local elections in the Czech republic - differences between men and women

Abstract:

V této práci analyzuji genderové rozdíly v politické perzistenci kandidátů na datech z voleb do zastupitelstva v České republice mezi lety 2006 a 2018. Pomocí metody regresní diskontinuity a metody omezené závislé proměnné zjišťuji, že ženy mají přibližně o 8 procentních bodů nižší pravděpodobnost opětovné kandidatury. Velikost tohoto efektu se mírně liší v čase a podle velikosti obce. Pro obě pohlaví platí, že poslední zvolený kandidát má vyšší pravděpodobnost opětovné kandidatury než první poražený kandidát. Efekt vítězství ve volbách tedy zvyšuje pravděpodobnost opětovné kandidatury, stejně tak zvyšuje i pravděpodobnost výhry v dalších volbách. Efekt inkumbenta je tedy rovněž kladný. Oba tyto efekty jsou silnější pro ženy než pro muže. Efekt inkumbenta je silnější v obcích s více zastupiteli. Přidaná hodnota práce spočívá zejména v kombinaci použitých dat a zvolené metody, díky které poskytuje originálním způsobem vhled do problematiky rozdílného chování mužů a žen na trhu politických voleb a ukazuje, že ženy se chovají systematicky jinak a jsou méně vytrvalé v komunální politice.

Abstract:

In this thesis I analyze gender differences in political persistence of candidates based on data from local elections in the Czech Republic between 2006 and 2018. Using Regression Discontinuity design approach and Limited dependent variable method I find that female candidates are less likely to run elections again by approximately 8 percentage points. Size of the effect slightly varies over time and according to the size of municipality. For both sexes, the last elected candidate has a higher probability of re-run candidacy in next election compared to the first defeated candidate. The effect of winning an election therefore increases not only the likelihood of re-candidacy in the following election but also the probability of winning the next election again. In other words: incumbency effect is positive and significant. Both of these effects are stronger for female candidates. The incumbency effect is stronger in municipalities with more representatives. The added value of this thesis lies in combination of the data used and the chosen method which provides an original insight into the issue of different behavior of male and female in the market of political elections and shows that women behave differently and they are less persistent in local elections compared to men.
