The effect of productivity and other environmental factors on the forest herb-layer diversity

Abstract:

I když se diverzitou rostlinných společenstev zabývala již řada studií, v mnoha případech doposud jednoznačně nevíme, které faktory ji podmiňují. To se týká zejména temperátních a boreálních lesů, jejichž stromové patro je relativně druhově chudé a diverzita je určována především jejich bylinným podrostem. Za jeden z nejvýznamnějších faktorů ovlivňujících lokální druhovou bohatost rostlin je obecně považována produktivita. Předpokládá se, že nejvyšší počty druhů mohou být zaznamenány při středních hodnotách produktivity, zatímco na produktivnějších stanovištích diverzita klesá. Přestože tato unimodální odpověď byla opakovaně prokázána u travinných společenstev, u lesní vegetace se závěry různí. Předchozí studie naznačují i důležitost půdního pH a dostupnosti světla v lesním podrostu, ale doposud neznáme jejich relativní význam v porovnání s produktivitou. Moje disertační práce si klade za cíl odpovědět na tyto otázky: Jaký je vztah diverzity a produktivity bylinného patra temperátních a boreálních lesů? Závisí pokles druhové bohatosti s rostoucí produktivitou zejména na kompetičním vyloučení nebo na omezené zásobě adaptovaných druhů? Je diverzita bylinného patra ovlivněna i jinými faktory, zejména půdním pH a dostupností světla, a jsou tyto méně nebo více významné než produktivita? Co podmiňuje produktivitu bylinného patra? Je možné odhadnout produkci biomasy u dříve zapsaných ploch? Výsledky jsou prezentovány v následujících článcích: Článek I (Axmanová et al., v tisku, Global Ecology and Biogeography): V temperátních opadavých lesích Evropy jsme nalezli pozitivní vztah mezi diverzitou a produktivitou bylinného patra, což je zřejmě důsledek zkráceného gradientu produktivity. Produktivita bylin je limitovaná stromovým patrem, a proto dosahuje mnohem nižších hodnot než těch, které odpovídají vrcholu a následnému poklesu diverzity v nelesní vegetaci. Potvrdili jsme, že půdní pH a dostupnost světla také ovlivňují diverzitu bylinného patra a relativní význam všech těchto faktorů se mění podle regionálního kontextu. Článek II (Axmanová et al., submitted): Oblast středního Jakutska je málo produktivní, a proto jsme analogicky k temperátním lesům očekávali i malou nadzemní kompetici a monotónně narůstající počet druhů podél gradientu produktivity, a to jak v lesní i nelesní vegetaci. Nicméně diverzita nelesní vegetace začala klesat už při mnohem nižších hodnotách produktivity než v temperátních trávnících a přestože jsme v lesní vegetaci nepotvrdili významný pokles diverzity, druhově bohatší typy chyběly. Pokles diverzity v takto málo produktivní oblasti je pravděpodobně důsledkem malého počtu druhů adaptovaných na produktivnější stanoviště. Článek III (Axmanová et al., 2011, Plant and Soil): Studovali jsme faktory podmiňující produktivitu bylinného patra doubrav (vyjádřenou jako roční nadzemní biomasu) a srovnávali výhody různých metod používaných ke stanovení potenciální produktivity, mimo jiné i fytometrického experimentu. Rozdílné přístupy společně ukázaly, že nejvýznamnější faktory ovlivňující produktivitu byly v tomto případě zápoj stromového patra a fosfor v půdě. Článek IV (Axmanová et al., submitted): Biomasu bylinného patra jsme predikovali pomocí modelů založených na pokryvnostech druhů ve snímcích a průměrných výškách rostlin stanovených podle určovacího klíče. Modely byly úspěšně testovány na čtyřech nezávislých datových souborech a ve většině případů predikovaly biomasu lépe než Ellenbergovy indikační hodnoty pro živiny. Tyto modely mohou být použity jak na historické snímky, tak i při novém sběru dat, jako nedestruktivní a rychlá alternativa k odběru biomasy.

Abstract:

Despite much research effort we still do not have clear conclusions on the determinants of species richness in temperate and boreal forests, in which the actual diversity mostly depends on their herb-layer. Habitat productivity is generally considered as one of the key determinants of local plant species richness and according to the unimodal (humped-back) model the species richness peaks at intermediate productivity and declines towards the more productive habitats. However, in contrast to grassland vegetation, the conclusions on forest species richness–productivity (SR–P) patterns remain controversial. Previous studies showed that also soil pH and light availability in the forest understory are important, but the relative roles of these factors were not assessed in the context of habitat productivity. My Ph.D. thesis tries to answer these main questions: What is the SR–P relationship in the herb layer of temperate and boreal forests? To what extent is the decline in species richness along productivity gradient caused by competitive exclusion versus species pool effects? Is the herb-layer species richness affected also by other factors such as soil pH and light availability and are they more or less important than productivity? What affects the herb-layer productivity and is it possible to estimate the biomass production in already sampled plots? The results are presented in the following papers: Paper I (Axmanová et al., in press, Global Ecology and Biogeography): We revealed monotonically increasing relationship between species richness and productivity in the herb layer of European temperate forest. We suggest that this SR–P pattern results from limited productivity gradient under the tree layer canopy. In contrast, in temperate grasslands the productivity gradient is considerably longer and the species richness peaks and declines at much higher productivity values than we recorded in forest herb layer. We confirmed that soil pH and light availability also significantly affect the herb-layer species richness and the relative importance of all these factors depends on the regional context. Paper II (Axmanová et al., submitted): In this study of low-productive landscape of central Yakutia we expected low aboveground competition and therefore monotonically increasing SR–P pattern (analogically to temperate forests) in both the forest herb layer and grassland vegetation. However, the grassland species richness peaked and declined at much lower productivity than in temperate grasslands and although we did not reveal a significant decline in forest diversity, rich communities were absent. We conclude that the species richness decline in such low productive region might be a consequence of a limited pool of species adapted to more productive habitats. Paper III (Axmanová et al., 2011, Plant and Soil): We studied determinants of the herb-layer productivity in oak forests (expressed as annual aboveground biomass) and we compared advantages of different methods used to estimate potential productivity, including a phytometer experiment. Combined evidence based on different approaches indicated that the most important factors were canopy shading and soil phosphorus. Paper IV (Axmanová et al., submitted): We predicted herbaceous biomass using models based on species covers in the plot and their mean heights assigned according to a flora manual. The models were successfully tested on four independent data sets and in most cases performed better than the Ellenberg indicator values. These models may be applied both on historical vegetation data as well as in new data sampling. Therefore, we propose them as a non-destructive and fast alternative to biomass harvest.
