Croatia's entry into the euro area from the perspective of the optimal currency area theory

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce analyzuje vývoj Chorvatska vedoucí ke vstupu do eurozóny z pohledu teorie optimálních měnových oblastí. Je zde zachycena a analyzována chorvatská ekonomika od devadesátých let 20. století přes téměř tři desetiletí až po vstup do eurozóny v roce 2023. Pohled teorie optimálních oblastí je porovnán s hodnocením dle Maastrichtských kritérií, přičemž ve výsledku se ukazuje, že celý akt vstupu do měnové unie je především politickou záležitostí a zda je měnová unie optimální měnovou oblastí, tak také závisí na politických rozhodnutích.

Abstract:

This thesis analyses Croatia's path to the euro area from the perspective of the theory of optimal currency areas. The Croatian economy is captured and analysed from the 1990s through almost three decades to the entry into the Eurozone in 2023. The view of the optimal currency area theory is compared with the Maastricht criteria assessment, and the result shows that the whole act of joining the monetary union is primarily a political matter and whether the monetary union is an optimal currency area also depends on political decisions.
