Salazar's Regime Estado Novo in Portugal

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce pojednává o ministerském předsedovi Portugalska Antóniovi de Oliveiru Salazarovi a jeho politice Nový stát (port. Estado Novo). V úvodu práce jsou objasněny vybrané koncepty demokratických a nedemokratických režimů. Část práce se pak věnuje životu tohoto portugalského politika a shrnutí důležitých historických událostí v Portugalsku, které jsou klíčové k pochopení politiky Estado Novo. Základem práce je charakteristika vnitřní, zahraniční a koloniální politiky Salazara během Nového státu. Pod vnitřní politiku je zařazena nová ústava, systém voleb, fungování rady ministrů, vznik nových organizací, potlačování opozice, tajná policie, propaganda a vztah s katolickou církví. V rámci zahraniční politiky jsou popsány mezinárodní vztahy Portugalska s Velkou Británií, Španělskem, Německem, Spojenými státy a Československem. Součástí je i pohled na Salazarovu politiku vůči zámořským územím, především Angole, Guinei Bissau, Mosambiku a Portugalské Indii. V závěru se práce věnuje politické situaci uvnitř Portugalska po smrti premiéra a revolučnímu roku 1974.

Abstract:

This Bachelor thesis disserts about a prime minister of Portugal António de Oliveira Salazar and his statesmanship of the Estado Novo. The beginning of the thesis expands chosen conceptions of democratic and undemocratic regimes. A part of the work follows the life of this Portuguese statesman and the summary of important historical events in Portugal which are fundamental for understanding the policy of the Estado Novo. The major part of my thesis is based on characteristics of home, external and colonial politics of Salazar during the New State. Home policy includes a new constitution, a system of elections, a function of Council of Ministers, an inception of new organizations, a repression of opposition, a secret police, a propaganda and a relation with the Catholic Church. Relations with the United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, the USA and Czechoslovakia are described in terms of the external policy. The view of Salazar's politics in the face of overseas departments, most of all Angola, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique and Portuguese India, is part of this section too. The conclusion of the thesis follows a situation inside Portugal after death to the prime minister and the revolution year 1974.
