Language change and variation in former British territories: Belize

Abstract:

This Bachelor Thesis describes the language characteristics of Belize, which includes the ethnic composition and linguistic affiliation of the individual groups. The thesis is mainly engaged in Creole, a widely used dialect not only in this area, and its function and diversity are analysed both on formal and informal level. Furthermore, social and linguistic aspects of Creole dialect are evaluated as well as role of English as the official language. The thesis also analyses factors which may influence the future language development.

Tato bakalářská práce popisuje jazykovou charakteristiku Belize, což zahrnuje etnické zastoupení obyvatelstva a jazykovou příslušnost jednotlivých skupin. Především se ale práce zabývá kreolštinou, jakožto hojně užívaným dialektem angličtiny nejen v tomto prostoru, a její funkce a různorodost jsou analyzovány na formální i neformální úrovni. Dále jsou pak zhodnoceny sociální a lingvistické aspekty kreolštiny a role angličtiny jako oficiálního jazyka. Rovněž pak práce analyzuje faktory, které v současnosti ovlivňují nebo mohou ovlivňovat jazykový vývoj do budoucna.
