Aspects of self-regulation in working and studying emerging adults

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá aspekty seberegulace u lidí ve vynořující se dospělosti a rozdíly v prožívání tohoto období mezi studující a pracující skupinou lidí ve vynořující se dospělosti. Vychází z Arnettovy teorie vynořující se dospělosti, Bandurova modelu seberegulace a jeho teorie self-efficacy a z Tobinova modelu copingových strategií. Výsledky ukazují, že se tyto dvě skupiny lidí liší v dimenzi vnímaných možností a dimenzi zaměření na ostatní. V míře self-efficacy se tyto dvě skupiny statisticky významně nelišily, ale lišily se v preferovaných copingových strategiích, u studující skupiny se ukázala preference adaptivních copingových strategiích, u pracující těch neadaptivních. Dále bylo zjištěno, že self-efficacy koreluje s copingovými strategiemi - negativně s neadaptivními a pozitivně s adaptivními. Dimenze vynořující se dospělosti také významně korelovaly se self-efficacy, konkrétně se jednalo o dimenzi možnosti, zaměření na sebe a dimenzi nestability. Některé copingové strategie významně korelovaly s dimenzemi vynořující se dospělosti: mezi dimenzí možnosti a copingovou strategií řešení problému a kognitivní restrukturací, mezi dimenzí nestability a fantazijním únikem, sebeobviňováním a sociální izolací. Také dimenze zaměření na ostatní korelovala s vyjádřením emocí a dimenze zaměření na sebe pozitivně korelovala s řešením problému a kognitivní restrukturací.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis explores aspects of self-regulation in individuals during emerging adulthood and investigates the contrasting experiences of this period between the studying and working groups of people in emerging adulthood. The thesis is based on Arnett's theory of emerging adulthood, Bandura's model of self-regulation and his theory of self-efficacy, as well as Tobin's model of coping strategies. The findings suggest that the two groups of people differ in terms of perceived opportunities and the level of focus on others. The two groups did not show statistically significant differences in self-efficiency levels. However, they exhibited contrasting preferences in coping strategies: the studying group displayed a preference for engagement coping strategies, while the working group preferred disengagement coping strategies. Furthermore, a correlation was observed between self-efficacy and coping strategies - negative with disengagement coping strategies and positive with engagement coping strategies. Additionally, significant correlations were found between dimensions of the emerging adulthood and self-efficacy, specifically dimensions of possibilities, self-focus, and instability. Certain coping strategies demonstrated significant correlations with dimension of emerging adulthood. Specifically, the dimension of possibilities correlated with problem solving and cognitive restructuring coping strategies, the dimension of instability with wishful thinking, self-criticism, and social withdrawal coping strategies. Also, the dimension of other-focus correlated with expressing emotions as a coping strategy, and the dimension of self-focus correlated positively with problem solving and cognitive restructuring as coping strategies.
