The Comparation of Film Adaptations of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá srovnáním románu Mary Shelleyové Frankestein s jeho filmovými adaptacemi: Frankenstein z roku 1931, The Curse of Frankenstein z roku 1957 a Mary Shelley's Frankenstein natočený v roce 1994. Práce je členěna do dvou hlavních bloků, teoretického a analytického, jež doplňuje kapitola ilustrující další možné interpretační přístupy. Jako teoretické východisko je představena naratologická teorie Seymoura Chatmana, na jejímž základě je vypracována srovnávací metoda. Sledovány budou především proměny v motivech a formální výstavbě jednotlivých snímků.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with comparison between the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and its film adaptations: James Whale′s Frankenstein from 1931, Terence Fisher′s The Curse of Frankenstein from 1957, and Kenneth Branagh′s Mary Shelley′s Frankenstein from 1994. The work is divided into two parts, the theoretical and analytical, and that is supplemented with a chapter, witch illustrates more possible interpretative approaches. As a theoretical starting point is introduced the Seymour Chatman′s narratological theory, on witch basis is the comparative method worked out. Above all are followed the changes in motives and in the formal construction of single movie.
