Monogeneans parasitizing African fishes of Labeo (Cyprinidae): species diversity and host spectrum

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá druhovou diverzitou monogeneí parazitujících na afrických rybách rodu Labeo. První část studie, která představuje teoretický úvod k dané problematice, zahrnuje charakteristiku třídy Monogenea a čeledi Cyprinidae se zaměřením na rod Labeo. Na tuto část navazuje seznam monogeneí dosud zaznamenaných na hostitelích rodu Labeo, který je vypracován ve formě tří check-listů: parazit-hostitel, hostitel-parazit a hostitel-parazit dle lokality. Ty předkládají celkem 46 druhů (včetně 3 poddruhů) monogeneí zařazených do 4 rodů: Dactylogyrus (30), Dogielius (14), Diplozoon (1) a Neodiplozoon (1). Kromě 15 hostitelských druhů rodu Labeo byla některá monogenea nalezena také na druzích rodu Barbus, Brycinus, Leptocypris nebo Raiamas. Parazitovaným orgánem byly ve všech případech žábry. Počet druhů monogeneí na jednom hostitelském druhu se pohybuje od 1 (např. L. rosae) do 18 (L. coubie). Z hlediska hostitelské specifičnosti můžeme 28 druhů monogeneí považovat za oixenní (tzn. zaznamenaných pouze na 1 hostitelském druhu) a 18 druhů za stenoxenní (tzn. cizopasící na 2 a více hostitelských druzích). Dosavadní záznamy o monogeneích na rybách rodu Labeo pocházejí z 15 afrických států, přičemž mezi oblasti s největším počtem realizovaných výzkumů patří Mali, Senegal a Ghana. Práci uzavírá příloha obsahující morfologicko-taxonomické zhodnocení monogeneí ze žaber druhu Labeo niloticus z oblasti jezera Turkana (Keňa).

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the species diversity of monogeneans parasitizing African fishes of Labeo. The first part of the study is a literature review arranged to give a theoretical backup to the subject and it includes general characteristics of the class Monogenea and the family Cyprinidae focusing on the genus Labeo. The second part provides listing of the monogeneans hitherto reported on the African species of Labeo in the form of three check-lists: parasite-host, host-parasite and host-parasite check list by countries. A literature search for monogenean species on fishes of Labeo revealed records of 46 species (including 3 subspecies) belonging to 4 genera: Dactylogyrus (30), Dogielius (14), Diplozoon (1) and Neodiplozoon (1). These parasites were reported from 15 species of Labeo, some of them even also from fishes of other genera, namely Barbus, Brycinus, Leptocypris or Raiamas. All monogenean species were collected from the gills of their hosts. Monogenean communities on respective hosts display variable species richness, which ranges from 1 (e.g. on L. rosae) to 18 (reported from L. coubie) species per host species. The host specificity of these parasites is also variable, with 28 species considered as oioxenous (i.e. infesting only a single host species) and 18 considered as stenoxenous (i.e. infesting 2 or more host species). All existing records of monogeneans on species of Labeo come from 15 African countries and the majority of the realised research has been done in Mali, Senegal and Ghana. The thesis is concluded by an appendix that contains a morphological taxonomic evaluation of monogeneans found on the gills of Labeo niloticus from Lake Turkana (Kenya).
