Cross-Cutting Online Political Discussions in Times of Crisis: The Perception and Implications of Incivility, and Intolerance

Abstract:

Tato práce se zaměřuje na antinormativní projevy, jako je neslušnost a netolerance, negativita a konfliktní chování na sociálních sítích v České republice (region Střední a Východní Evropy) v bezprecedentním období zdravotní (COVID-19) a bezpečnostní (rusko-ukrajinská válka) krize. Studie identifikuje různé formy neslušnosti a hodnotí jejich dopad na online prostředí. Tím, že studie věnuje pozornost nuancím a charakteristikám spojeným s jednotlivými typy konfliktního chování, se snaží zhodnotit jejich důsledky pro demokratickou společnost a možné způsoby jejich řešení v online prostředí. Práce se skládá ze čtyř spoluautorských výzkumných článků založených na obsahové analýze, datech z dotazníkového šetření a kvalitativních rozhovorech. Data byla sbírána v letech 2020-2022. Výzkum si klade následující cíle: (1) porozumění distribuci antinormativních projevů v komentářích na Facebooku a charakteristikám neslušných a netolerantních komentářů, (2) identifikace prediktorů konfliktního chování v online diskuzích, (3) zkoumání vztahu mezi neslušností, homogenním/heterogenním prostředím a politickou polarizací/antagonismem a (4) poskytnutí hlubšího vhledu do vnímání antinormativních projevů, nesouhlasu a postojů účastníků k diskuzním partnerům majícím odlišný názor v online diskuzích. Hlavní výsledky dizertace ukazují, že na českém Facebooku převažují neslušné komentáře, které se zdají být pro demokracii méně škodlivé než komentáře zahrnující netoleranci. Přestože je neslušnost spojena s argumentací a vysvětlením názoru a je zde zároveň nižší pravděpodobnost, že bude cílena na konkrétní osoby, i tak je účastníky diskuzí vnímána negativně a může působit jako překážka zapojení se do online diskuze. Negativní komentáře jsou přímo provázané s politickým antagonismem, a tedy s polarizujícím vnímáním společnosti. Zatímco neslušnost je spojena s heterogenním prostředím, intolerance souvisí s prostředím homogenním. Nicméně s polarizací je spojené jak homogenní, tak i heterogenní prostředí. Z údajů také vyplývá, že ti, kteří používají konfliktní chování, jsou v diskuzích velmi aktivní, a tedy i viditelní. Jsou to spíše méně vzdělaní muži s nízkým politickým zájmem. Vzhledem k tomu, že osobní charakteristiky zásadně ovlivňují používání a vnímání neslušného chování, může být část společnosti systematicky vyřazena z online veřejné sféry. Práce se zabývá praktickými důsledky výskytu různých forem neslušných komentářů v online prostoru, jejich implikace pro deliberativní demokracii, a především rolí krizového období.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on antinormative expressions, such as incivility and intolerance, negativity, and conflict-oriented behavior, on social network sites in the Czech Republic (Central and Eastern Europe region) during the unprecedented times of health (COVID-19) and security (Russo-Ukrainian war) crises. The study identifies different forms of hostility in online discussions and evaluates their impact on the online environment. By paying attention to the nuances and characteristics associated with individual types of conflict-oriented behavior in online discussions, the study aims to evaluate the consequences for a democratic society and the possible ways to deal with them in the online environment. The thesis consists of four co-authored research articles based on content analysis, surveys, and qualitative interviews. The data were collected between 2020-22. The research aims to achieve the following objectives: (1) understand the distribution of antinormative expressions in comments on Facebook and the characteristics of uncivil and intolerant comments; (2) identify the predictors of conflict-oriented behavior in online discussions; (3) examine the relationship between incivility, the counter-attitudinal/pro-attitudinal environment, and political polarization/antagonism; and (4) provide in-depth insights into participants' perceptions of antinormative expressions, disagreement, and attitudes towards counter-attitudinal discussion partners in online discussions. The main findings of the thesis suggest that uncivil comments prevail on Czech Facebook, which appear to be less harmful toward democracy than the intolerant ones. Although incivility is linked to justified opinion expression and argumentation, and less likely to target specific people, it is still perceived negatively by the discussion participants and it can act as a barrier to engagement in an online discussion. Negative comments are directly related to political antagonism and, therefore, a polarizing perception of society. While incivility is linked to a heterogeneous environment, intolerance is related to a homogeneous one. Both counter-attitudinal and pro-attitudinal environments are connected with polarization. The data also indicate that those who use conflict-oriented behavior are very active and visible in discussions. They are more likely to be less educated men with low political interest. Given that personal characteristics fundamentally influence the use of and perception of uncivil behavior, part of society may systematically be underrepresented in the online public sphere. The thesis discusses the practical implications of the occurrence of various forms of hostile comments in the online space, their consequences for deliberative democracy and, above all, the role of the crisis period.
