Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce využívá metod literární analýzy k prozkoumání vztahů mezi hlavnými tématikami ve vybraných dílech Herberta George Wellse. Přičemž zvláštní důraz je kladen na tématiky technologie, pokroku a evoluce. Tato práce dále tvrdí, že interakce mezi těmito tématikami vytváří v oněch novelách nedozírné implikace, které je obohacují o zcela nové úrovně významu. Podrobením těchto implikací literární analýze, autor předkládá názor, že Herbert George Wells použil médium science fiction k vyjáření svých názorů na jím vnímané problémy Viktoriáské Anglie jako byl třeba dopad sociální stratifikace na budoucnost lidské rasy, cena technologického a vědeckého pokroku pro lidstvo, role etiky a svědomí a morálky v našem vědeckém a technologickém počínání a důležitost přírody ve světě podmaněném vědou.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to employ the method of literary analysis to explore the relationships that hold between the major themes in the selected works of Herbert George Wells, with particular emphasis placed upon the themes of technology, progress, and evolution. It further argues that interactions of those themes introduce into the novels profound implications that enrich them with additional strata of meaning. By subjecting these implications to a literary analysis the author proposes that Herbert George Wells used the medium of science fiction to comment on the perceived issues of his own time such as the role of social stratification in the future of human race, the price that technological and scientific progress may one day levy upon humanity, the role of morality and ethics in our scientific and technological endeavours, or the importance of nature in the scientific world.
