The noble person in the conceptions of Confucius and Epictetus

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se věnuje metodickému srovnání etických koncepcí dvou starověkých filozofů, pocházejících z odlišných kultur. Hlavním cílem práce je dokázat, že koncept ?šlechetného člověka? v etických systémech Konfucia a Epiktéta je velmi podobný. Východiskem pro analýzu problematiky ?šlechetného člověka? je studium odborných textů a jejich následná interpretace a komparace. První část práce se zabývá pojmem ?šlechetný člověk? a jeho souznačnými analogiemi. Větší část práce se věnuje vymezování ?šlechetného člověka? vůči jiným prototypům člověka v daných společnostech. Závěr obsahuje shrnutí a zobecnění.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on a systematic comparison of the ethical concept of the nobleman presented by two ancient philosophers coming from different cultural backgrounds. The objective of the thesis is to show the similarities between the concepts of ?the nobleman? held by Confucius and Epictetus. The starting point for the analysis of ?the nobleman? was the study of scholarly texts, followed by their interpretation and comparison. The first part of the thesis deals with the notion of ?the nobleman? and its synonymous analogies. A bigger portion of the work concentrates on the fact how a nobleman is to be distinguished from other prototypes of man in given societies. The conclusion offers a summary and generalization of the given topic.
