Integration of Muslims into Western societies

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce vychází z teorie Jeffreyho Alexandera, která se týká vnějších a vnitřních faktorů procesu inkluze. Bakalářská práce se věnuje rozšiřování hranic solidarity ústřední skupiny a umožnění okrajové skupině začlenění do mezního společenství. Ústřední skupinou je v tomto případě západní evropská společnost a mezní skupinou muslimové. Cílem práce je nalezení strukturálních příčin selhání integrace muslimů do zemí západní společnosti. Tohoto cíle je dosahováno pomocí rozvíjení konceptu sociální inkluze na úrovni vnějšího a vnitřního sociálního prostředí, a to konkrétně v dimenzi občansko-politické. Vnější úroveň se týká oblasti legislativních procesů. Vnitřní faktory zahrnují postoje majority, jež ovlivňují inkluzi na této úrovni. Práce se rovněž významnou měrou věnuje vztahu etnicity, národní identity a občanství. Analýza jednotlivých faktorů ovlivňujících inkluzivní procesy tak vede k nalezení strukturálních příčin selhání integrace muslimů, které má původ nejen v limitech legislativních procesů, ale zejména v etnickém pojetí národních identit či v samotné struktuře islámského a křesťanského náboženství.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is based on the theory of Jeffrey Alexander, relating to external and internal factors of the process of inclusion. This thesis deals with the process of expanding boundaries of solidarity of the core group and allowing the outgroup to be included into terminal community. The core group, in this case is Western European society and the outgroup are Muslims. The aim of this study is to find the structural causes of failure of Muslim integration into Western society. This objective is being achieved by developing the concept of social inclusion at the level of internal and external factors, specifically in civic and political dimension. The external factors concern the legislative process. Internal factors include the attitudes of the majority, which influence the inclusion at this level. A great deal of attention is devoted to the relation among ethnicity, national identity and citizenship. The Analysis of factors which influence inclusive processes, leads to finding the structural causes of failure of Muslim integration, that originates not only from the limits of the legislative processes, but especially from the ethnic conception of national identity and the structure of Islam and Christianity.
