„Different“ geometry in art: from cubism to the hyperspace

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá vlivem „jiných“ geometrií na výtvarné umění počátku 20. století. „Jinými“ geometriemi jsou v této práci míněny systémy neeuklidovské geometrie, které byly rozvinuty v rámci vědeckého diskurzu 19. a 20. století spolu s konceptem čtvrtého rozměru. Tyto objevy výrazně ovlivnily uměleckou tvorbu pro následující desetiletí. Ve své práci nejprve představím vývoj vědeckého diskurz o „jiných“ geometriích a následně uvedu umělecké směry a jejich hlavní představitele, kteří se problematikou „jiných“ geometrií inspirovali a využili myšlenky s touto problematikou spojené ve své tvorbě. Následně budu analyzovat odkaz těchto umělců v novomediální tvorbě.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with “different” geometries and their impact on Fine Arts in the beginning of the 20th century. By “different” geometries in this thesis we mean systems of non-Euclidean geometry which were introduced in the scientific discourse of the 19th and 20th century along with the concept of the 4th dimension. These findings had a great impact on art production of the next decades. In my thesis I first present the advance in scientific discourse about “different” geometries, and afterwards I present the art movements with their main figures, who were inspired by the issue of “different” geometries, and who then used issue-related ideas in their production. Finally I analyze the influence of their work on New Media art.
