Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce pojednává o historii a zkušenostech řeckých imigrantů v USA se zaměřením na protiřecké postoje od začátku 20. století po 20. leta 20. století. Práce popisuje první masovou vlnu řecké imigrace do USA a prezentuje charakteristické znaky těchto řeckých imigrantů. Dále analyzuje protiřecké postoje, jejich vznik a průběh a zapojení Ku Klux Klanu. Na závěr je dopad protiřeckých postojů použit k vysvětlení následné asimilace řecké komunity do americké společnosti, zejména za pomoci řecké organizace American Hellenic Educational Association.

Abstract:

This thesis discusses the history and experience of the Greek immigrants in the USA with an emphasis on the anti-Greek sentiment of the 1900s-1920s. It describes the first mass Greek immigration to the USA and presents the characteristics of the Greek immigrants. Then, it analyzes the anti-Greek sentiment, its origin and process, and the Ku Klux Klan’s involvement in it. Finally, the impact of the anti-Greek sentiment is used to explain the consequent assimilation of the Greek community into American society, especially with the help of the Greek organization – the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association.
