The Causes and Impacts of the Current Opioid Crisis on American Society

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the complex combination of health and social issues collectively labelled as the opioid crisis (or epidemic). This work aims to uncover some of the causes and possible connections between them as well as evaluate the impacts of the epidemic on US society, especially in large urban areas. The materials used consist of articles and investigations from medical journals together with social surveys and interviews with the addicts and first responders. Because the crisis is a result of multiple influences, the goal will be to analyse some of the different factors at play. These could include inadequate regulations and excessive prescription of opiates, from which pharmaceutical companies make a profit. The impacts of the situation on American society and culture will be explored, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of the widespread consequences of the crisis.

Abstract:

Tato práce se zaměřuje na komplexní kombinaci zdravotních a sociálních problémů, které jsou kolektivně označovány jako opiátová krize (nebo epidemie). Cílem této práce je odhalit některé z příčin a možná spojení mezi nimi a také zhodnotit dopady epidemie na americkou společnost, zejména ve velkých městských oblastech. Materiály použité v práci zahrnují články a šetření z lékařských časopisů spolu se sociálními průzkumy a rozhovory s narkomany a záchranáři. Vzhledem k tomu, že vývoj krize závisí na více vlivech, cílem bude analyzovat některé z faktorů ovlivňujících její vývoj. Tyto mohou zahrnovat například nedostatečné regulace a nadměrné předepisování léčiv, z něhož čerpají farmaceutické společnosti. Důsledky situace na americkou společnost a následné kulturní změny budou rovněž zkoumány se záměrem přispět k detailnějšímu pochopení rozsáhlých následků této krize.
