Cockney English - Linguistic analysis

Abstract:

This Bachelor Thesis on Cockney English will be divided into theoretical and practical parts. In the theoretical part we will describe the historical and sociolinguistic origins of this variant of English. In addition, we will present the profile of Cockney English in terms of morphology, lexicology and phonology all against the background of standard British English. A list of lexemes and phrases describing this particular variant of English will be introduced and Cockney Rhyming Slang will be covered, the principles of it also described against the background of standard British English vocabulary. In the practical part we will try to verify the hypothesis; the verification will be conducted within the fields of phonology, lexicology and grammar. All will be analysed in the structure of speech contained in Cockney slang. In the interview we will analyse the phonemic transcription, show changes in the implementation of the segmental phonemes and suprasegmental changes of the sound in Cockney English. In addition, we will present lexical and morphological analysis of the text in relation to the matters mentioned in the theoretical part. The practical part also includes a survey carried out amongst grammar school students. The research focuses on the student?s interest in studying some Cockney Rhyming slang at school as part of their relaxation and play with language.

Abstract:

Práce na téma Cockney English bude rozdělena na část teoretickou a praktickou. V teoretické části osvětlím historický a sociolingvistický původ dané varianty angličtiny. Dále předložím profil Cockney angličtiny z hlediska morfologického, lexikálního a fonologického a to na pozadí standardní angličtiny. Předložím seznam lexémů a frází, charakterizující danou variantu angličtiny, osvětlím princip Cockney Rhyming slang opět na pozadí standardní anglické slovní zásoby. V praktické části se pokusím ověřit hypotézy, jejichž verifikace bude provedena pomocí praktické analýzy zvukové, lexikální a gramatické stavby řeči v rozhovoru v Cockney slangu. Provedu analýzu fonetického transkriptu rozhovoru, poukážu na změny v realizaci segmentálních fonémů i změny v oblasti suprasegmentálních rysů zvukové stránky Cockney angličtiny. Dále předložím lexikální a morfologickou analýzu daného textu v návaznosti na poznatky uvedené v teoretické části. Praktická část navíc obsahuje anketu mezi studenty vysoké školy. Výzkum je zaměřen na to, zda by studenti měli zájem, se ve škole učit Cockney Rhyming slang jako součást odpočinku a hry s jazykem v hodině.
