Comparison of Web Browsers in Terms of Impact on Privacy Protection

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá porovnáním webových prohlížečů z hlediska dopadu na ochranu soukromí uživatele na internetu. Práce má definovány dva cíle. Prvním cílem práce je provedení dotazníkového šetření zaměřeného na zjištění povědomí respondentů ohledně dopadů procházení webu na ochranu soukromí a využívání specializovaných nástrojů pro ochranu soukromí při procházení webu. Druhým cílem práce je vybrat dané webové prohlížeče a porovnat je z hlediska dopadů jejich používání na ochranu soukromí, přičemž výběr je ovlivněn výsledky cíle prvního.Teoretická část práce se soustředí na způsoby, kterými lze sledovat internetovou aktivitu daného uživatele a důvody a možnosti využití či zneužití sledování a shromážděných dat z tohoto plynoucích. V praktické části se nejdříve definuje, provede a vyhodnotí dotazníkové šetření, jehož výsledky jsou poté použity na úpravu kritérií pro výběr šesti webových prohlížečů, které jsou otestovány nástroji pro zjištění možností identifikace uživatele.Hlavním přínosem práce je zlepšení porozumění daných webových prohlížečů z hlediska ochrany soukromí na internetu, přičemž jsou porovnány dvě populární varianty běžných webových prohlížečů a čtyři méně známé prohlížeče zaměřené na zvýšenou ochranu soukromí na internetu. Z výsledků testů lze poté zjistit, kde se nachází výhody těchto ochranných prohlížečů oproti běžným a nakolik tyto prohlížeče splňují svá tvrzení o jejich funkcionalitě.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the comparison of various web browsers in the terms of their impact on users‘ privacy while browsing the web. There are two objectives defined in this thesis. The first objective is the execution of a questionnaire survey designed to find out respondents’ awareness of the impacts of web browsing on their privacy online and the use of specialized tools to protect that privacy. The second objective is the selection of web browsers to be analyzed and to compare those in terms of their impact on users’ online privacy, where the criteria of selection are influenced by the results of the first objective.The theoretical part of this thesis focuses on the means through which tracking of users’ internet activity can be achieved, the reasons for such actions, and the possibilities of use or misuse of such tracking and the data compiled from it. The practical part of this thesis first deals with the definition, execution, and evaluation of the questionnaire survey, where the results are used to modify the criteria for the selection of six web browsers to be analyzed with tools designed to detect the possibilities of tracking the users’ internet activity.The main benefit of this thesis is to improve the insight into the given web browsers in terms of online privacy protection. Out of the six browsers two are generic popular user choices, and four are lesser-known specialized browsers designed to maintain a higher level of users’ online privacy protection. It can be ascertained from the test results where the advantages of these specialized browsers lie in comparison to the generic choices, and to what extent these browsers fulfill their claims about their functionality.
