Ethnic identity of second generation immigrants

Abstract:

Abstrakt: Práce se zabývá problematikou etnické identity u potomků imigrantů v České republice. Teoretická část přibližuje různé aspekty pojmů identita, etnicita a emigrace a poskytuje tak rámec pro uvažování o daném problému. Přibližuje také několik výzkumů etnické identity uskutečněných v zahraničí. Výzkumná část práce je prezentací narativního výzkumu, jehož cílem bylo zkoumat, jak potomci imigrantů v České republice konstruují ve svém vyprávění svou etnickou identitu. Výzkumu se účastnilo 6 potomků imigrantů a data byla získána metodou polostrukturovaného rozhovoru. Na základě analýzy dat z uskutečněných rozhovorů bylo možné identifikovat několik způsobů konstruování etnické identity: definování sebe jako člena jedné konkrétní etnické skupiny (tzv. jednoznačná etnická identita), definování sebe jako neúplného člena dvou různých etnických skupin (etnická identita jako složená ze dvou částí), popření smyslu definování sebe jako člena etnické skupiny (vymezení se vůči etnické kategorii a definování sebe jako člena širší kategorie nebo úplné distancování se od skupinové klasifikace sebe sama a důraz na individuální identitu). Ve vyprávěních se projevil vliv primordiálního chápání etnicity, které v podmínkách střední a východní Evropy dominuje. Základním rámcem pro konstruování etnické identity byl pro participanty předpoklad, že etnická identita je záležitostí pocitů, které se v nějaké konkrétní podobě vyskytují u všech lidí. Dalším rámcem pak byla představa o jednoznačné etnické identitě jako normě, přičemž jednoznačná etnická identita je chápána jako úplná identifikace s jednou etnickou skupinou. Konstruování etnické identity bylo v příbězích participantů propojeno s konstruováním smyslu emigrace. Emigrace byla zobrazována jako zátěžová událost, která participanty připravila o jednoznačnou etnickou identitu. Tato ztráta byla vykoupena výhodami, které jsou spojeny s nevyhraněnou etnickou identitou, kterou si participanti v důsledku zkušenosti se dvěmi různými společnostmi vytvořili.

Abstract: The thesis deals with the problem of ethnic identity of second generation immigrants in Czech republic. The first part of the thesis provides a theoretical background introducing the concepts identity and ethnicity and the problem of emigration. The second part of the thesis presents a narrative research which was realized in order to investigate how second generation immigrants construct their ethnic identity. Six second generation immigrants were interviewed and their narratives were analysed. The participants constructed their ethnic identity in several ways: one of the participants defined herself as a full member of one ethnic group. Most of the participants constructed their ethnic identity as made up of 2 components. Some of them distanced themselves from the ethnic cathegory and defined themselves as members of non-ethnic cathegories or stressed the value of their individual identity. The narratives mirrored the primordial discourse of ethnicity dominant in the central Europe area. Participants interpreted the concept of ethnic identity in terms of feelings that are regarded as natural for everyone. They also considered a full identification with one ethnic group as a norm. Construction the ethnic identity was connected with the construction of the meaning of emigration. The emigration was presented as a difficult and stressful turning-point in life that lead to some hard time and loss. This loss was later redeemed for by the gains connected with the indefinite ethnic identity developed due to the experience with two different cultures.
