British and American Features in the Pronunciation of the Czech Students of English

Abstract:

This thesis has two main aims: (1) to outline main differences between standard British and American pronunciation, (2) to determine pronunciation preferences of students with special emphasis on its British and American features. The theoretical part of the thesis focuces on some of the basic terms concerning pronunciation; accent, idiolect, dialect and standard. Most importantly, it summarizes the main differences between British and American pronunciation standards. The practical part is comprised of questionnaires and recordings of the students. Based on the results, which were analysed quantitatively and qualitatively, it was determined that the students pronunciation is strongly influenced by the pronunciation model which was taught at primary and secondary schools. Further more, their pronunciation is mainly influenced by the media which prevents the students from having consistent pronunciation.

Abstract:

Tato práce si klade dva hlavní cíle: (1) vysvětlit hlavní rozdíly britského a amerického výslovnostního standardu, (2) zjistit výslovnostní preference studentů angličtiny s ohledem na britské a americké rysy. Teoretická část práce se zaměřuje na základní termíny týkající se výslovnosti; akcent, idiolekt, dialekt a standard. Hlavním cílem této části je shrnutí základních rozdílů britského a amerického výslovnostního standardu. Praktická část se skládá z dotazníků a nahrávek studentů, které byly pořízeny. Na základě výsledků, které byly kvantitativně a kvalitativně zpracovány, bylo zjištěno, že výslovnost studentů je silně ovlivněna výslovnostním modelem používaným na základních a středních školách a také vlivem médií, které jim částečně brání v konzistentní výslovnosti.
