Ectoparasites of exotic birds

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývala ektoparazity žijícími v peří exotických ptáků. V rámci vlastního výzkumu se dále také zabývala popisem potenciálně nových druhů všenek (Insecta: Psocodea: Phthiraptera) sesbíraných z pit (Aves: Passeriformes: Pittidae). V literární rešerši byl nejprve popsán parazitismus jako jeden ze vzájemných vztahů mezi dvěma organismy, byla vysvětlena nejpoužívanější kritéria pro dělení parazitů a byl nastíněn celkový význam parazitů. Popsán byl jak negativní význam parazitů, tak jejich možné pozitivní využití. Dále byly představeny nejrozšířenější skupiny ektoparazitů, vzhledem k tématu bakalářské práce byla pozornost zaměřena především na druhy parazitující na ptácích. Dále byly podrobně charakterizovány všenky jakožto ektoparazité, kterých se týkal můj vlastní výzkum. Detailněji byl představen rodový komplex Philopterus, do kterého všenky na pitách původně patřily a který je i jednou z nejrozšířenějších skupin všenek vyskytujících se v Česku. Vedle tohoto komplexu byl dále popsán i rod Debeauxoecus Conci 1941, do kterého se všenky vyskytující se na pitách momentálně řadí. Na závěr literární rešerše byla popsána i čeleď pitovití, skupina starobylých pěvců obývajících převážně jihovýchodní Asii, kteří žijí skrytým způsobem života. Popis těchto ptáků byl zároveň doplněn o seznam všenek, které jsou dosud z pit známé. Vlastní výzkum zahrnoval morfologický popis všenek sesbíraných z pit. Všenky na mikroskopických preparátech byly vizuálně prozkoumány, dále z nich byla odebrána biometrická data a spočítány štětiny. Bylo také zhotoveno několik nákresů identifikovaných skupin všenek a částí jejich těl. Všenky byly určeny jako rod Debeauxoecus a mezi vzorky byly nalezeny nejméně čtyři pravděpodobné druhy. Definitivním taxonomickým závěrům bránil špatný stav všenek a absence samců, kteří jsou pro určování vhodnější, druhy tedy byly popsány zatím jen předběžně.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis dealt with ectoparasites living in feathers of exotic birds. My own research included descriptions of new putative louse species (Insecta: Psocodea: Phthiraptera) from pittas (Aves: Passeriformes: Pittidae). First, a literature review described parasitism as one of relationships organisms. It explained the most common ways of parasites classification and outlined the general importance of parasites. Their negative significance was described, as was the potential positive use of parasites. Subsequently, I introduced the most common ectoparasites groups with focus on avian parasites, considering the topic of the thesis. From them, chewing lice were characterized in detail, since this was the group handled in my thesis. Special attention was paid to the Philopterus complex, a louse group to that originally contained the pittas’ lice, and one of the most common louse group in Czechia. Besides that, I also described the genus Debeauxoecus Conci 1941, where the researched lice currently belong. In the end of the literature review, the family of Pittidae was also described. It represents a group of ancient songbirds mostly inhabiting Southeast Asia, known by their secretive life style. This part included a list of ectoparasites known from pittas. My own research consisted of morphological description of lice collected from pittas. Lice on microscope slides were visually examined, measured, and their setae were counted. For the identified louse groups, morphologically significant body parts were illustrated. The chewing lice were determined as Debeauxoecus, and contained at least four putative species. Definite systematic conclusions were hindered due to the poor conditions of the lice and absence of males, which are more suitable for identification.
