Legitimization of the situation of Roma education in the context of Berger- Luckmann’s sociology of knowledge

Abstract:

Tématem předkládané bakalářské práce je legitimizace současné situace vzdělávání Romů v České republice. Celá práce je zasazena do rámce sociologie vědění P. L. Bergera a T. Luckmanna. V úvodu je nastíněn proces sociální konstrukce reality, který je doplněn konceptuálními prostředky, pomocí nichž lidé zpracovávají sociální informace o různých skupinách osob. Dále jsme stručně charakterizovali Berger – Luckmannův koncept několikaúrovňové legitimizace, která uspořádání světa ospravedlňuje. V ústřední části naší práce se nejprve věnujeme deskripci současné situace vzdělávání Romů a následně její legitimizaci. Soustředíme se na třetí ze čtyř legitimizačních úrovní zahrnující způsoby, jimiž danou situaci vysvětlují a ospravedlňují odborníci v rámci explicitních teorií. Na závěr je pozornost obrácena na způsoby, jakými je daná realita, zpětně internalizována Romy i majoritou v průběhu socializace. Samozřejmé, specialisty legitimizované vědění o postavení Romů pak působí na pozici Romů intenzitou sebenaplňujícího proroctví a pro majoritu poskytuje prostor pro morální alchymii s uplatněním stereotypních postojů. Tím je Berger – Luckmannův kruh externalizace – objektivace – internalizace uzavřen.

Abstract:

The topic of the presented thesis addresses the legitimization of the situation of Roma education in the Czech Republic. The whole thesis is framed by the context of Berger- Luckmann’s sociology of knowledge. The first chapter deals with the process of social construction of reality, which is accompanied by conceptual means by which people process social information about the various groups of persons. We also briefly characterized Berger – Luckmann’s multilevel concept of legitimization, which justifies the organization of the world. In the central part of our work, we described the current situation of Roma education at first, and consequently its legitimization. We focus on the third of four levels of legitimization, including ways of explanation of the situation by experts in the framework of explicit theories. Finally, attention is drawn to the ways how is a given reality retroactively internalized by Roma and the majority during socialization. Obvious knowledge, legitimized by experts, of the status of the Roma effects Roma as a self-fulfilling prophecy and provides space for the application of moral alchemy with stereotypical attitudes for the majority. This closes the Berger – Luckmann’s circle of externalization - objectification - internalization.
