Are students of economics more "selfish" than their peers?

Abstract:

Práce se zaměřuje na problematiku altruismu. Cílem analýzy je na datech získaných čtyřmi experimenty na vzorku českých vysokoškolských studentů ověřit hypotézu, že studenti ekonomických oborů vykazují nižší míru altruismu a společenské kooperace, než jejich vrstevníci bez ekonomického vzdělání. Výsledky nepotvrdily předpoklad nižší míry altruismu a sociální kooperace skupiny ekonomů v porovnání s jejich vrstevníky. Získaná data naznačují, že byť se v jednokolových hrách obě skupiny chovaly velmi podobně, existuje možnost rozdílného druhu altruismu mezi skupinami -- ekonomové mohou tíhnout spíše k racionálnímu altruismu a "vypočítavosti", studenti jiných oborů zřejmě více podléhají sociálnímu tlaku, tendenci k recipročnímu jednání a vlivu emocí.

Abstract:

This paper studies the problem of altruism in our social behavior. The main aim of the paper is to support or reject hypothesis that students of economics behave less altruistically and show lower level of social cooperation than their peers with non-economic majors. We used four experiments with group of econ and non-econ students. The results of research cannot support hypothesis of lesser altruistic behavior of students with economic majors. Obtained data shows that in one-round games both groups fared more or less the same. There exists an option of different types of altruism between the groups tested: economists may tend to more rational altruism waging future profits; non-economists may more likely consider social pressure, strong reciprocity and act under influence of instant emotional state.
