Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the genre of autobiography and its rendition by female authors of African American origin. The theoretical part describes the genre as such, mentions the particularities and characteristic features of female autobiography in general and its development in America from the 17th to the 20th century, focusing mainly on the area of African American female literature, however, it also outlines the historical background of the periods of time when the writings analysed in the practical part emerged, depicting the position and situation of women in society. The aim of the practical part of the thesis is a form-related and a content-related analysis of three autobiographical novels, namely Harriet Jacobs´s Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Maya Angelou´s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and Audre Lorde´s Zami: A New Spelling of My Name, and a comparison of them. Jacobs provides an authentic testimony of a black female slave, Angelou describes her childhood and coming of age during the pre-civil rights era, Lorde openly narrates her coming out story. The analytical part also describes the contribution of these three books to the genre of autobiography and how the authors broaden and/or modify it. The thesis offers an insight into the personal lives of three women from the same ethnic group, who had to face problems which were both different but also very similar due to the racial origin and their sex, regardless the period of time they were born and lived in.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce pojednává o žánru autobiografie a jeho pojetí ženskými autorkami afroamerického původu. Teoretická část popisuje žánr jako takový, uvádí specifika a charakteristické prvky ženské autobiografie obecně a její vývoj v Americe v rozmezí 17. - 20. století, především pak v oblasti afroamerické ženské literatury, nastiňuje však také historický přehled doby, ve které vznikala díla analyzována v praktické části, zaměřený primárně na postavení a situaci žen ve společnosti. Náplní praktické části je formální a obsahová analýza tří vybraných autobiografických románů, konkrétně Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl Harriet Jacobsové, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings Mayi Angelou a Zami: A New Spelling of My Name Audre Lordeové, a jejich vzájemné porovnání. Jacobs přináší autentickou výpověď černošské otrokyně, Angelou líčí své dětství a dospívání v době těsně předcházející černošskému hnutí za občanská práva, Lorde otevřeně vypráví svůj coming out příběh. Analytická část dále popisuje přínos těchto tří děl pro žánr autobiografie, a také to, jak autorky tento žánr revidují a/nebo rozšiřují. Práce nabízí pohled na osobní život tří žen pocházejících ze stejné etnické skupiny, čelících problémům jak odlišným, tak vzhledem k rasovému původu a pohlaví dosti podobným, a to bez ohledu na dobu, v níž se narodily a žily.
