Active hope in a student support group. An action research to cope with environmental distress.

Abstract:

Termín „environmentální distres“, obecně známý jako environmentální žal, označuje náročné psychické stavy spojené se současnou environmentální krizí a s jejími dopady na lidi a na životní prostředí. Akademická debata kolem něj je poměrně mladá a zabývá se jeho různými formami, např. úzkostmi a depresí, ale také společenským charakterem existenciální hrozby, kterou environmentální krize představuje. Na různé formy distresu existují různé strategie zvládání. Některé z nich jsou pasivní a nevědomé, jiné jsou aktivní a konstruktivní a je možné s nimi pracovat pomocí mnohých intervencí – jako je posílení komunikačních strategií jedince – a podpůrných struktur, jako jsou neterapeutické podpůrné skupiny. V teoretické části této práce jsou systematicky rozpracované rozmanité studie v oblasti environmentálního distresu a jeho copingových strategií. V empirické části uvádím metody participativního akčního výzkumu, jejichž prostřednictvím jsem prozkoumala možnosti řešení environmentálního distresu u studentů Environmentálních studií na Masarykově Univerzitě, zvláště při realizaci podpůrné skupiny podle metody „Aktivní naděje“ od Joanny Macy. Hlavní výzkumnou metodou je design zaměřený na člověka, který byl teoretizovaný společností IDEO. Data jsem posbírala pomocí přípravných a evaluačních dotazníků, osobních deníků studentů, setkání s nimi aj., analyzovala jsem je mj. kódováním podle zakotvené teorie a rozpoznáním změn v praxi, strategii a vnímání při přípravě a realizaci projektu. Výzkum ukázal, že daná aplikace metody Aktivní naděje může mít pozitivní nebo minimálně přínosný účinek na účastníky podpůrné skupiny. Zároveň je doporučený větší důraz na bezpečnostní opatření při realizaci.

Abstract:

The term „environmental distress“, generally known as ecological grief, refers to severe psychical states related to the contemporary environmental crisis and to its impact on people and nature. The academic debate around this distress is relatively young and it concerns its different forms such as anxiety and depression, but also the societal character of the existential threat that the environmental crisis represents. There are different strategies to cope with these different forms of distress. Some of them are passive and unconscious, others are active and constructive and they can be promoted with many interventions, such as strengthening one's own communicative strategies, and with support structures such as non-therapeutic support groups. In the theoretical part of this thesis, a systematic elaboration of the diverse studies in the field of environmental distress and its coping strategies can be found. In the empirical part, I present the methods of participative action research through which I explored the possible solutions for the environmental distress of the students of Environmental studies at Masaryk University, especially through the realization of a support group based on the “Active hope” method by Joanna Macy. The main research method used is the Human Centred Design, which has been theorized by the company IDEO. I collected data by preparative and evaluative questionaries, students’ personal diaries, meeting with them and other methods. I analysed them inter alia through coding in conformity with grounded theory and through the identification of changes in praxis, strategy and perception while preparing and realizing the project. The research showed that this application of the Active hope method can have a positive or at least beneficious effect on the participants of the support group. Nonetheless, more emphasis on safety measures in its realization is recommended.
