Reflection of Elizabethan society in the Taming of the Shrew

Abstract:

Tato práce zkoumá dílo Zkrocení zlé ženy, Williama Shakespeara, z pohledu historického kontextu Alžbětinské Anglie. Představuje anglickou patriarchální společnost s jejími konvencemi a očekáváním, které měla v postoji k ženám. Srovnává dostupné oficiální prameny, které vybízejí ženy k bezbřehé poslušnost vůči mužům, s realitou života lidí a zasahuje vše do historického kontextu. Práce konstatuje, že status žen se stal běžným tématem pro umělecká díla. Na základě dalších akademických zdrojů dokazuje, že svobodný proslov ženy byl spatřován jako možné potenciální ohrožení patriarchálního řádu společnosti. Dále na základě této divadelní hry popisuje běžný společenský i rodinný život v Alžbětinské Anglii, zachycuje společenské konvence.Velká pozornost je též věnovaná tématu vzdělávání v této hře. Opět zasazuje toto téma do historického kontextu dané doby a zachycuje phenomén změny v Alžbětinském školství pod vlivem humanismu, který pozitivně započal proměnu tehdejšího školního systému. Zejména je zdůrazněn aspekt nového pedagogického přístupu, který zajišťuje, že student po ukončení studia se začlení do společnosti jako její plnohodnotný uznávaný člen.

Abstract:

This paper highlights the reflection of Elizabethan society depicted in the play Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare. It introduces the English patriarchal society with prescribed conventions and expectations of women. It confronts official records instructing women to obedience with reality of Elizabethan England in historical context. It argues that debate over status of women in the society is reflected in dramatic works and literature. Using examples from other sources the paper presents facts to support the evidence that uncontrolled dominantly feminine speech was regarded a a possible threat to the patriarchal social order. On the basis of the play it describes the Elizabethan family life, social life and social conventions. It focuses on the theme of education in the play. It presents the historical background of the play and captures the phenomena that positively influenced Elizabethan way of schooling. Particular attention is paid to the reflection of aspects of humanistic education that produces socially approved speaking subjects regardless gender.
