The (Un)Happy Prince: Oscar Wilde´s Fairy Tales Seen Through the Eyes of Children and Adults

Abstract:

With an eye to Oscar Wilde's own admission that his fairy tales target a broader audience than just children, the aim of this master's thesis is to provide an analysis of Oscar Wilde's The Happy Prince and Other Tales from the perspective of both the child and the adult reader. As children are more apt to perceive the psychic processes of the collective unconscious that are mirrored most purely in the fairy tales, the thesis will mainly focus on the interpretation of the archetypes in the chapters that deal with the child's perspective. In the part focused on the adult perspective, it will explore Wilde's perception and critique of his society that inevitably invites his mature readers to serious reflection in the context of his tales of love, compassion, and sacrifice.

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je analýza díla Oscara Wildea Šťastný princ a jiné pohádky z perspektivy dětského i dospělého čtenáře, neboť jak sám Oscar Wilde připustil, jeho pohádky jsou určeny širšímu publiku a nejen dětem. Vzhledem k tomu, že děti jsou více schopny vnímat psychické procesy kolektivního nevědomí, jež se nejvíce odráží v pohádkách, bude se práce zaměřovat především na interpretaci archetypů v kapitole, která se zabývá dětským úhlem pohledu. Wildeovo vnímání a kritika jeho společnosti bude prozkoumána v části zaměřené na dospělou perspektivu, která vybízí zralé čtenáře k seriózní reflexi v souvislosti s jeho příběhy o lásce, soucitu a oběti.
