Redefining the alternative: The Emergence and Development of Alternative Art Spaces from the 1960s to the Present

Anotace:

Tato magisterská práce se zaměřuje na vznik a vývoj alternativních uměleckých prostorů, od americké umělecké scény 70. let přes československou uměleckou scénu 70.-90. let až po současnost. Práce poukazuje na proces přetváření nejen samotné alternativní scény, ale i názorů jejích účastníků na ni. Analýza různých přístupů k chápání a využívání alternativní scény od 70. let 20. století umožňuje hlouběji pochopit dynamiku jejího vývoje - na základě rozdílů a společných rysů alternativních uměleckých prostorů ve dvou zemích: Spojených státech a Československu. Československá alternativní scéna je v práci zahrnuta v období před a po období normalizace. Přestože Československo mělo zcela odlišný kontext dění, je tato scéna analyzována s cílem ukázat, jak odlišně a jak podobně byly prožívány dva globálně odlišné problémy - ekonomická dominance kapitalismu a politický totalitní tlak . A jak tyto problémy formovaly alternativní scénu svých současníků. Práce se odvíjí od studia vývoje americké a české scény 20. století k analýze současné české scény 21. století, kde jsou podrobně zkoumány současné alternativní prostory. Je analyzována jejich povaha a je provedena studie, která ukazuje, jak se změnilo chápání alternativy, co nového do tohoto pojmu přišlo a jak se alternativa přizpůsobila současné realitě a potřebám společnosti.

Abstract:

This Master thesis focuses on the emergence and development of alternative art spaces, beginning with the American art scene of the 1970s, then moving on to the Czechoslovak art scene of the 70s-90s and up to the present day. The work highlights the process of reshaping not only the alternative scene itself, but also the participants' views on it. The analysis of different approaches to understanding and utilizing the alternative scene since the 1970s allows for a deeper understanding of the dynamics of its development - based on the differences and commons between alternative art spaces in two countries: the United States and Czechoslovakia. The Czechoslovak alternative scene is also covered in the work in the periods before and after the period of normalization. Despite the fact that Czechoslovakia had a completely different context of events, this scene is analyzed in order to show how differently and how similarly two globally different problems - the economic domination of capitalism and the political totalitarian pressure - were experienced. And how these problems shaped the alternative scene of their contemporaries. The work develops from the study of the development of the 20th century American and Czech scene to the analysis of the Czech contemporary scene of the 21st century, where contemporary alternative spaces are examined in detail. Their nature is analyzed, and a study is conducted to show how the understanding of the alternative has changed, what new things have come to this concept, and how the alternative has been adapted to the contemporary realities and needs of society.
