Menstruation in the literature for adolescent girls

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá pojetím menstruace ve vybrané literatuře pro dospívající dívky. Konkrétně se jedná o pět knih autorek a autorů českého původu, které byly vydány českými nakladatelstvími mezi lety 1987 až 2016. Časové rozestupy mezi jednotlivými tituly tvoří devět až deset let kromě jediné výjimky, kdy obě knihy pochází ze stejného roku. Mezi knihami lze očekávat variabilitu v tématickém zaměření, různé seřazení priorit, odlišný způsob zpracování informací a v neposlední řadě se bude lišit i grafická úprava knih. Přesto zůstává neměnnou skutečností, že dospívání bývá vnímáno jako přelomové období v životě dívky. Prožívání její první menstruace (tzv. menarche) bude mít nepopiratelný vliv na prožívání menstruace i do budoucna. K pozitivnímu vnímání menstruace mohou tedy přispět i příručky pro dospívající dívky. Což se v mnohých případech neděje, a to i přestože menstruace je naprosto přirozený fyziologický jev. Menstruace a symptomy s ní spojené jsou stále opakovaně tabuizovány a vysmívány. Tato bakalářská práce si klade za cíl pomocí tří konceptů dané knihy analyzovat a následně vzájemně porovnat. Jako nástroj k analýze poslouží menstruační paradox politické teoretičky Iris Marion Young, přístup k menstruaci existencialistické filozofky Simone Beauvoirové a koncept čistoty a nebezpečí antropoložky Mary Douglasové.

Abstract:

The Bachelor’s thesis focuses on the concept of menstruation in the selected literature for teenage girls. Specifically, there are five books by authors and authoresses of Czech origin, which were published by Czech publishers between 1987 and 2016. The time span between individual titles is from nine to ten years, except for one exception when both the books originate in the same year. Among the books we can expect the variability in the thematic focus, different order of priorities, different ways of processing information and, last but not least, the graphic design of the books is different. It still remains a constant fact that adolescence is perceived as a turning point in a girl’s life. Expectation of her first menses (so-called menarche) will have undoubtedly an impact upon experience with her first menstruation even to the future. Guides for teenage girls can also contribute to the positive perception of menstruation. This does not happen often, even though the menstruation is a natural physiological phenomenon. The menstruation and symptoms associated with it are still repeatedly tabooed and ridiculed. This Bachelor’s thesis aims to analyse and compare the given books by means of the three concepts. The period paradox by a political theorist Iris Marion Young, the approach to menstruation by an existential philosopher Simone Beuvoir and the concept of purity and danger by an anthropologist Mary Douglas will serve as tools for analysis.
