Digitised handwriting speed measurement

Abstract:

Rychlost psaní na prvním stupni základní školy je v současné době opomíjenou oblastí jak z pohledu učitelů, tak odborníků. Tato diplomová práce se zabývá významem a vývojem rychlosti psaní u intaktních žáků a její postavení v minulých i současných kurikulárních dokumentech. Na základě zkušeností ze zahraničních studií využíváme k měření rychlosti psaní digitalizační tablet. Ve výzkumné části práce statisticky ověřujeme hypotézy týkající se vztahu mezi tradičním měřením rychlosti psaní (počet písmen za určitý čas) a digitalizovaným měřením (mm/s). Dále sledujeme, zda přetrvává lineární trend vývoje rychlosti při změně způsobu měření. Výsledkem výzkumu je, že oběma způsoby měření rychlosti dosáhneme podobných závěrů, avšak digitalizované měření přináší mnohem více proměnných, které při procesu psaní můžeme analyzovat. Vývojový lineární trend je zachován. Současné průměrné hodnoty rychlosti psaní za jednu minutu jsou ve 2. ročníku 16 písmen, ve 3. ročníku 20 písmen a ve 4. ročníku 30 písmen, což je méně než v minulosti. Tyto hodnoty mohou sloužit učitelům jako orientační vodítko k posouzení průměrné rychlosti ve své třídě s naším výzkumným souborem.

Abstract:

The handwriting speed at the first level of primary school is currently a neglected area from the perspective of both teachers and experts. This thesis examines the importance and development of handwriting speed in intact pupils and its position in past and current curriculum documents. Based on the experience of foreign studies, we use a digitizing tablet to measure handwriting speed. In the research part of the thesis we statistically test hypotheses concerning the relationship between the traditional measurement of handwriting speed (number of letters in a certain time) and the digitized measurement (mm/s). We also investigate whether a linear trend in speed persists when the method of measurement is changed. As a result of the research, we find that both ways of measuring speed reach similar conclusions, but that digitized measurement provides many more variables that can be analysed during the writing process. The developmental linear trend is maintained. The current averages of handwriting speed per minute are 16 letters in second grade, 20 letters in third grade and 30 letters in fourth grade, which is lower than in the past. These values can serve as a guide for teachers to assess the average speed in their classroom with our research set.
