The Brno Town and his Cultural and Social Life

Abstract:

Cílem práce bylo postihnout situaci uměleckého života města Brna a jeho vlivu na život veřejný. Sledovaná problematika má své počátky v 2. polovině 50. let, kdy začíná činnost brněnských tvůrčích skupin. Problematika byla dále sledována v souvislosti s institucí Domu umění města Brna. Důležitou roli v brněnském prostředí sehrála kapitola Divadla Husa na provázku a jeho interdisciplinární orientace. Závěr práce je zaměřen na široké pole projevů osobností brněnské výtvarné scény. Situace je sledována v jednotlivých oblastech kulturního života do počátku 90. let. Další vývoj není hodnocen z důvodu problémového přístupu k interpretování současných uměleckých projevů. Typické projevy public art ve smyslu sochařských prací ve veřejných prostorech nebo architektuře se v brněnském prostředí objevují. Tato díla nelze ovšem do této kategorie zařadit, neboť vznikala za zcela jiných podmínek a limitů (cenzura, nesvoboda, podstatná role objednavatele), než jak tomu je u děl veřejného umění západního světa. Velká řada prací akčního umění by mohla být pojata jako projevy new genre public art. Toto zařazení musí být ovšem chápáno se všemi nuancemi, které v totalitní době v naší společnosti fungovaly. Zejména se jedná o nemožnost vystupovat zcela bez omezení ve veřejném prostoru. Většina akcí je tak spíše než pro širokou veřejnost realizována pro angažované publikum. Přesto se domnívám, že ze strany tvořících umělců bylo poměrně hojně využíváno strategií typických pro veřejné umění. Druhá strana komunikačního systému – veřejnost - bohužel k těmto projevům přistupuje mnohem chladněji a na díla často nereflektuje.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis was to describe the situation of art life in the city of Brno, and its influence on the public life. The origins of the focus sphere lie in the second half of the 1950’s, when the creative groups in Brno began with their activities. Special attention was paid to the institution of the House of Art of Brno. An important part in the Brno artistic environment was played by the Husa na provázku theatre, and its interdisciplinary orientation. Finally, the thesis deals with a broad spectrum of artworks produced by the leading personas of the Brno art scene. The situation is studied from the viewpoint of the respective areas of the cultural life until early 1990’s. Further development is not assessed due to complicated access to the interpretations of the contemporary artworks. Characteristic manifestations of the public art – namely sculptures in public spaces or in architecture do occur in Brno; however, these works cannot be placed in this category, as they originated under entirely different conditions and limitations (censorship, lack of freedom, substantial role of the client) than in public art works in the western world. Many works from the action art category could be understood as the expressions of the new genre public art. This categorisation, however, must be understood with all the nuances of the Czech society under the totalitarian regime. This especially refers to the impossibility of free demonstration of one’s ideas in the public space. Most of the events were therefore organised for the engaged audience rather than the broadest public. Despite all these facts I do think that the creative artists used many strategies that are characteristic for the public art. However, the other end of the communication system – the public – often approached these works with great reservations, and often without the expected reflection.
