Food Strategy of Groundhoppers (Orthoptera: Tetrigidae)

Abstract:

Food strategies of insects are diverse. Food quality and quantity affect the amount of food required to obtain sufficient nutrition for growth and reproduction and the energy for metabolic processes. Groundhoppers exhibit a conservative feeding strategy associated with the consumption of detritus and lower plants (mainly moss species). This detrito-bryophagy is also reflected in the structures of their mandibles and specific antennal segments and sense organs on their mouthparts. The diversity and quantity of moss species in the alimentary tract of groundhoppers vary with season, and more moss species are consumed in the spring and summer than in the autumn. Groundhoppers frequently consume the moss species that are dominant at each locality, but some species-specific preferences in moss consumption have been observed. The consumption rate and digestibility of moss fragments seem to be very low in groundhoppers, since green fragments of mosses occur in groundhopper faecal matter. Decaying organic matter (detritus) is assimilated more effectively, has higher digestibility, and provides more energy than moss tissues. Mosses are unimportant sources of energy, and the significance of their portions in consumed food seems to differ. Detritus can probably provide more nutritional compounds than mosses, and it is probably the more preferred food for groundhoppers.

Abstract:

Potravní strategie hmyzu jsou různorodé. Kvalita a kvantita přijaté potravy má vliv na růst, reprodukci a celkovou energii nezbytnou pro metabolické pochody u organismů. Marše konzumují především detrit a nižší rostliny (zejména mechy), představují tak zástupce hmyzu s konzervativní potravní strategií. Tato detrito-bryofágie se u nich projevuje také ve struktuře článků tykadel, smyslových orgánů a v morfologii ústního aparátu. Druhové zastoupení a množství zkonzumovaných mechů je během aktivního života marší různý. Marše často konzumují ty mechy, které na lokalitě dominují. I když byly zaznamenány i určité druhově specifické preference. Intenzita konzumace a stravitelnost mechových částí se jeví jako velmi nízká, jelikož v trusu jedinců se objevují nestrávené fragmenty mechů. Detrit je asimilován účinněji, má vyšší stravitelnost a poskytuje více energie než mech. Mechy se zdají být až druhotným zdrojem energie a jejich význam v potravě marší není zcela jasný. Detrit tak pravděpodobně poskytuje více živin (energie) a proto je zřejmě preferovanějším zdrojem potravy u marší.
