Artificial intelligence as a communication tool with a specific focus on mental health

Abstract:

Cílem magisterské diplomové práce bylo poskytnutí podrobného náhledu na využití nástrojů umělé inteligence v oblasti duševního zdraví. Práce je doplněna o případovou studii tří vybraných chatbotů fungujících na tomto principu. V první části práce jsou představeny počátky vývoje umělé inteligence. Od počítačem zprostředkované komunikaci se problematika přesouvá až do momentu, kdy se stroj ocitá v roli komunikátora. Následující kapitola je poté zaměřena na oblast terapeutické pomoci. Zpočátku se zaměřuje na popis historicky prvního pojetí umělé inteligence jakožto terapeuta. Následně je vysvětlen pojem automatizace v terapeutické praxi spolu s uvedením možných nástrojů umělé inteligence, které jsou aktuálně využívány. Objasněn je pojem chatbota spolu s uvedením hlavních rozdílů mezi tradiční terapií a terapií poskytovanou umělou inteligencí. Zmíněny jsou také možnosti nebezpečí v oblasti bezpečnosti a soukromí uživatele. Závěrem je poskytnut pohled na budoucnost vývoje technologií v oblasti duševního zdraví. Druhá část práce se zaměřuje na případovou studii vybraných aplikací pracujících na principu umělé inteligence. Analýza Woebot Health, X2AI Inc. Tess a Wysa poskytuje náhled na veřejně dostupné nástroje, které jsou popsány a následně doplněny o odborné studie, které prokazují jejich účinnost. Závěr práce poskytuje přehled dosažených zjištění spolu s předpokladem dalšího vývoje nástrojů umělé inteligence s konkrétním zaměřením na duševní zdraví.

Abstract:

The aim of the master's thesis was to provide a detailed insight into the use of artificial intelligence tools in the field of mental health. The work is supplemented by a case study of three selected chatbots operating on this principle. The first part of the thesis presents the beginnings of the development of artificial intelligence. From computer-mediated communication, the problem shifts to the moment when the machine finds itself in the role of communicator. The next chapter then focuses on the area of therapeutic assistance. Initially, it focuses on the description of the historically first concept of artificial intelligence as a therapist. Subsequently, the concept of automation in therapeutic practice is explained, along with an indication of possible tools of artificial intelligence that are currently used. The concept of chatbot is clarified together with the main differences between traditional therapy and therapy provided by artificial intelligence. The possibilities of danger in the area of security and privacy of the user are also mentioned. Finally, an overview of the future of technology development in the field of mental health is provided.The second part of the thesis focuses on a case study of selected applications working on the principle of artificial intelligence. Analysis by Woebot Health, X2AI Inc. Tess and Wysa provide insight into publicly available tools, which are described and then supplemented by expert studies that prove their effectiveness. The conclusion of the thesis provides an overview of the findings together with the assumption of further development of artificial intelligence tools with a specific focus on mental health.
