Abstract:

Robert Browning je jedním z hlavních představitelů Viktoriánské literatury. Jeho poezie je významná jak pro svou experimentální formu a pozdější zdokonalení dramatického monologu, tak pro detailní rozbor mužských postav. V této práci se analyzují hrdinové nejprve z rané poezie Roberta Browninga, respektive hlavní postavy z děl Paracelsus a Sordello, a poté navazuje rozbor tvorby Roberta Browninga z jeho středních let, pro kterou je klíčová sbírka Men and Women a postavy Roland a Fra Filippo Lippi. V první kapitole se podrobně rozebírá postava jménem Paracelsus. Nejprve je vysvětlen zdroj inspirace pro tuto postavu. Dále navazuje systematická analýza tohoto protagonisty, nejdříve vysvětlením jeho hlavní touhy a snu, ze kterého pak vyplývají jeho myšlenky a úvahy, jejichž vývoj je dále zmapován společně s postupným vývojem samotné postavy. K básni Sordello se v druhé kapitole praktikuje stejný systematický přístup. Na začátku se objasní inspirace hlavní postavy, a poté se detailně rozebere jeho sen a navazující myšlenky v souladu s vývojem charakteru. Nakonec je Sordello porovnán s hlavním charakterem díla Paracelsus, a jejich podobnost i rozličnost je podrobně prozkoumána. Třetí kapitola začíná krátkým vysvětlením uplynulých let mezi díly Sordello a Men and Women. Poté je stejným způsobem rozebrána báseň Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came a následně je provedeno porovnání hlavního charakteru Rolanda s postavou z prvního díla jménem Paracelsus. Dále je studována další báseň z této sbírky jménem Fra Lippo Lippi, ve které je též nejdříve rozebrána inspirace této postavy, a poté následuje analýza tohoto díla, jež je přizpůsobena formě této básně. Nakonec je i protagonista Fra Filippo Lippi porovnán s protagonistou z rané literatury Roberta Browninga jménem Sordello. V této práci se rozebírají hlavní mužské postavy Roberta Browninga z jeho rané tvorby a z básní ze středních let a jsou porovnávány také mezi sebou. Jeho hrdinové jsou vysvětleny v širším kontextu a jejich důležité myšlenky a názory jsou systematicky prezentovány a podrobně analyzovány.

Abstract:

Robert Browning is one of the most important poets of the Victorian period. This thesis analyzes the male characters in his early and middle poetry. The characters most significant in Browning’s early poetry are Paracelsus and Sordello, both appearing in the works named after them. The characters of Roland and Fra Filippo Lippi from the poems Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came and Fra Lippo Lippi represent Browning’s middle poetry, as they are one of the most significant characters in the acknowledged poems from Browning’s middle poetry collection Men and Women. The thesis evaluates their nature, thoughts and the important ideas they provide, according to progress of the plot and their inner development. In the first chapter Browning’s Paracelsus is examined. Firstly the inspiration of the character Paracelsus is presented. Afterwards, the desire of the character is evaluated in detail as it is of key importance to understand Paracelsus’ development and his further ideas. Lastly, these ideas, thoughts and their progress are analyzed together with the development of the character. The second chapter evaluates Sordello in the same manner. It analyzes the character’s inspiration, desire, and follows with detailed examination of his thoughts and ideas. Lastly the comparison of Paracelsus and Sordello is presented in order to point out their differences and similarities in both nature and ideas. The third chapter begins with short explanation of the development of Browning’s poetry between Sordello and Men and Women. Afterwards Roland from Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came is analyzed in the same fashion as the previous characters and then is compared with Paracelsus. The chapter continues with evaluation of the character Fra Filippo Lippi, firstly with the examination of the inspiration and then with analysis adjusted to the poem. Lastly, the character from Fra Lippo Lippi is compared with Sordello. The thesis concentrates on the nature and ideas of Robert Browning’s characters which are presented chronologically. It evaluates their inner development in a systematic manner, explaining the progress of their ideas together with the progress of the plot. The characters are also compared to point out the similarities and differences between Browning’s characters and their ideas.
