National Houses in Moravia 1868–1914. Architecture and Nationalism

Abstract:

Národní domy vznikaly v druhé polovině 19. století a před 1. světovou válkou tam, kde docházelo k ekonomickému, politickému a kulturními soupeření jednotlivých národů, které se ostatně v této době formovaly, např. skrze "obrození" do moderní podoby. Geograficky se práce zaměřuje na bývalé Moravské markrabství, tedy korunní zemi Rakouska-Uherska. Hlavním tématem práce je samotná architektura těchto budov - tedy jejich typ, forma, styl, prostor, urbanistické zasazení či funkce. Na všechna témata je však nahlíženo šířeji.

Abstract:

National Houses were built in the second half of 19th century and before WWI in places, where different nations competed with each other on the fields of economy, politics and culture. By the way, in this era, the nations were formed, e.g. by national revivals, to their modern shape. The thesis is geographically focused on the territory of former Margraviate of Moravia, one of the crown lands of Austro-Hungaria. The main topic of the dissertation is the architecture of these buildings itself - so, their type, form, style, space, urban setting or function. All these questions are discussed in a wider perspective.
