Hollywood at the Turn of the Millennium. Lingering of the Cinema of Attraction?

Abstract:

The paper focuses on mass arrival of digital technologies in mainstream Hollywood films of the 90’s. As concrete examples it chooses three films of this period: Terminator 2: The Judgment Day, Jurassic Park, The Matrix. The paper points to deviation from the usual standards of the classic film and describes the return of so-called aesthetics of astonishment. The paper seeks for connection and parallels with the early cinema period when films caused surprise and fascination with their visual and the use of the latest technology. The paper is mainly based on studies of T. Gunning who focuses on the early cinema period and seeks for parallels with present time. The paper looks on contemporary Hollywood production selecting films Transformers, Avatar and The Inception. It tries to describe and determine whether there has been a shift in Hollywood production in the past decade over the 90’s.

Abstract:

Práca sa zaoberá masovým nástupom digitálnych technológií v hollywoodskych mainstreamových filmoch v 90. rokoch 20. storočia. Ako konkrétne príklady si práca vyberá tri filmy z tohto obdobia: Terminator 2: The Judgment Day, Jurassic Park, The Matrix. Poukazuje na odklon od zaužívaných noriem klasického filmu a popisuje návrat k tzv. estetike úžasu. Hľadá súvislosti a paralely s obdobím začiatku kinematografie, kedy rané filmy spôsobovali údiv a fascináciu svojou vizualitou a použitou najmodernejšou technológiou. Vychádza najmä zo štúdií T. Gunninga, ktorý sa vo svojich prácach zaoberá ranou kinematografiou a hľadá paralely so súčasnosťou. Ďalej sa práca pozerá na najsúčasnejšiu hollywoodsku tvorbu a na vybraných filmoch Transformers, Avatar a The Inception sa snaží popísať a zistiť, či za uplynulú dekádu nastal v hollywoode posun v tvorbe oproti spomínaným 90. rokom.
