The Music Motives in the Selected Works of Italian Painter Evaristo Baschenis

Abstract:

Tématem této práce jsou hudební nástroje na zátiších italského barokního malíře Evarista Baschenise. Protože jde o umělce sedmnáctého století, v němž žili a tvořili vynikající evropští malíři, je Baschenis poměrně málo známý. Mimoto žánrem, který je základem jeho výtvarného díla, je zátiší. To k dokonalosti dovedli vlámští a holandští mistři, navíc v Itálii bychom další soudobé tvůrce zátiší nalezli jen s obtížemi. Stejně nezvyklé jsou i předměty, které si Baschenis volí jako modely, což jsou hudební nástroje. Protože uvedená práce není zaměřena jen na organologický rozbor, zajímal nás širší kontext. Práce seznamuje se životem Evarista Baschenise. Rodák z Bergama vedl podle dostupných pramenů poklidný a spokojený život zámožného duchovního, který si mohl dovolit věnovat se v míře více než dostatečné svým dvěma hlavním zálibám, tj. hudbě a malířství. V další části se věnuje malířství, kde krátce představuje italské barokní malířství se zvláštním zřetelem k lombardskému. Italské barokní malířství už nehraje onu fundamentální úlohu jako v době renesance, třebaže největší evropští umělci si stále jezdí na Apeninský poloostrov pro inspiraci a zkušenosti. Ale karta se začíná i obracet a například lombardští malíři, mezi něž patří i Baschenis, využívají podněty zaalpského umění. Jedna část je vyhrazena Caravaggiovi, jednomu z největších evropských barokních malířů. Je totiž pravděpodobné, že Baschenis jeho práce znal, kromě toho Caravaggio autorem prvního zátiší v dějinách malířství. V následující části zahrnuje kapitolu o hudbě. V baroku vznikaly nejen nové hudební formy, ale také došlo k akceleraci vývoje v oblasti hudebních nástrojů. Jejich nejslavnější tvůrci působili v severní Itálii. Jejich výrobky se objevují na Baschenisových obrazech, a proto posoudíme, jak je místo hudebníka dokáže využít malíř. Obsahem dalších dvou kapitol je pět Baschenisových typických zátiší z několika evropských galerií. Jejich výtvarně teoretický rozbor bude analýzou zátiší jako žánru, který ma svá specifika v kompozici, při aplikaci barvy a při práci se světlem. Také výběr modelu je určující pro celkový dojem z díla. Poslední z komentovaných zátiší nám posloužilo k syntéze předešlých dílčích poznatků. Závěr této práce popisuje několik vybraných nástrojů z uvedených zátiší. U každého nástroje je uvedena jeho historie, jeho popis a některé vývojové varianty. Do výběru se dostaly nástroje už běžně neužívané jako loutna a viola da gamba, znova módní spinet a ze stále užívaných nástrojů to jsou housle a flétna.

Abstract:

The subject of this work is the musical instruments in the still lifes of the Italian baroque painter Evaristo Baschenis. Because he was an artist of the seventeenth century, in which outstanding European painters lived and worked, Baschenis is relatively unknown. Moreover the genre which is the basis of his work is the still life. This had been brought to perfection by Flemish and Dutch masters, and in Italy we would find other contemporary still life artists only with difficulty. Equally unusual are the subjects which Baschenis chose as models, musical instruments. Because the present work is not focused only on an organological analysis, we are interested in the wider context. In Chapter One we deal with the life of Evaristo Baschenis. According to the available sources this native of Bergamo led the quiet and contented life of a well-to-do priest, would could afford to devote himself more as less as he wished to his two great pleasures, music and painting. Chapter Two is devoted to painting, in which we present Italian baroque painting with particular reference to Lombardy. Italian baroque painting now no longers plays the fundamental role that it did during the Renaissance, even if the greatest European artists still travel to the Apennine peninsula for inspiration and experience. But the card is starting to turn as, for example, the painters of Lombardy, of whom Baschenis is one, make use of inspiration from over the Alps. We have reserved one part of this chapter for Caravaggio, one of the greatest of European baroque painters. It is indeed likely that Baschenis knew his work, besides which Caravaggio was the painter of the first still life in the history of painting. The final part of this chapter presents still life as a new genre. We have placed the chapter on music after that on painting. The baroque saw the rise not only of new musical forms, but an acceleration took place in the development of musical instruments. And the greatest craftsmen were active in nothern Italy. Their creations appear in Bascheni's pictures, and we therefore look to see how they are used by the painter, and not by the musician. For the next two chapters we have chosen five typical Bascheni still lifes from several European galleries. The analysis of these at the visual theoretical level will be an analysis of still life as a genre, with its characteristics in composition, application of colour and its work with light. The choice of model is defining for the overall view of his work. The last of the still lifes served as a synthese of the preceding individual comments. The final chapter of the work describes several selected instruments from the still lifes under discussion. For each instrument we give its history, a description and some historical variants. The selection includes instruments which are now no longer in general use, such as the lute and viola da gamba, the once more fashionable spinet and of instruments still in use, the violin and flute.
