Effects of strategic change on employees of a goldmine in Ghana

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem mé diplomové práce bylo identifikovat dopady strategických změn na zaměstnance zlatého dolu Anglo Gold Ashanti Obuasi v Ghaně a formulovat doporučení pro management této firmy. Dalšími dílčími cíli, kterých jsem se ve své práci snažil dosáhnout, bylo zjistit, zda se zaměstnanci dolu AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi brání strategickým změnám, a pokud ano, pokusit se zjistit jejich důvody. Dále prozkoumat postoj zaměstnanců ke strategickým změnám a závěrem identifikovat hlavní manažerské schopnosti a techniky potřebné k tomu, aby byly strategické změny úspěšné. Pro studii bylo náhodně vybráno sto zaměstnanců. V této studii byl využit deskriptivní a kvantitativní přístup, kdy výzkumník shromáždil data z primárního zdroje pomocí strukturovaného dotazníků určeného k získání informací od zaměstnanců a managementu. Shromážděná data byla následně roztříděna a analyzována pomocí tabulek a grafů s využitím programu Microsoft Excel a (SPSS) 16.0. Studie odhalila, že strategické změny měly obrovský pozitivní dopad na zaměstnance. Zaměstnanci většinou souhlasili, že strategické změny zlepšily jejich pracovní výkon a zjednodušily jim práci. Zaměstnanci považovali za hlavní výzvu stres spojený se strategickými změnami. Odpor vůči strategickým změnám byl malý a zaměstnanci je byli ochotni přijmout. Zaměstnanci by se změnám bránili, pokud by jim důvody změn nebyly jasné a pokud by zamýšlená změna nepodporovala jejich kariérní růst. Na základě získaných informací a výsledků studie jsem doporučil vedení firmy efektivně komunikovat, věnovat velkou pozornost kariérnímu růstu zaměstnanců a zapojit se do stresového managementu během strategické změny v dole AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi. Pro management byl nakonec navržen klíčový akční plán během strategických změn.

Abstract:

The main objective of the study was to identify the effects of strategic change on employees of a Ghanaian goldmine (AngloGold Ashanti, Obuasi mine) and formulate recommendations for the management of the company. There were other specific objectives that the research sought to achieve. Firstly, ascertain whether employees of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi mine resist strategic change and if so, probe into their reasons for the resistance. Secondly, examine employees' attitude towards strategic change and finally identify the main managerial skills and techniques required to make the strategic change a success. Hundred (100) employees were randomly sampled for the study. Descriptive and quantitative approach were adopted in this study where the researcher gathered data from a primary source using a well-structured questionnaire intended to get information from employees and a structured interview questions for management. The data collected was then organized, tabulated and analyzed using tables, graphs and charts using Microsoft Excel and (SPSS) 16.0 software. The study revealed that strategic change had enormous positive effects on employees as employees mostly endorsed that strategic changes mostly improved their work performance and made their work less difficult nevertheless employees saw the stress involved in strategic changes as a major challenge, there were less resistance to strategic change and employees were willing to accept strategic changes but postulated that they would resist change if the reasons were not clear to them and if the intended change is not geared towards their career growth. Based on the information and results from the study, the researcher has recommended to management to communicate effectively, pay keen attention to employee career growth and engage in stress management during strategic change at AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi mine. Key Action Plan during strategic changes was eventually proposed for management.
