The portrayal of motherhood in the novels of Elena Ferrante

Abstract:

The objective of the thesis is to analyze the portrayal of mother and motherhood in the three novels of the contemporary Italian writer Elena Ferrante. The early chapters are concentrated on the life of the author, with the aim of exploring the possible options and reasons why Elena Ferrante remains anonymous. Consecutively is dealt the writer's relationship with the so-called "women's literature" and Naples, her hometown. The main part of the thesis focuses on the theme of motherhood, examining the mother’s figure in the first novel Troubling Love, change of the protagonist’s personality and her behavior towards the children in The Days of Abandonment, and the perception of the motherhood in last novel The Lost Daughter. In the final part, comparison is made pointing out the common and different elements and attributes of the novels.

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce je analyzovat zobrazení matky a mateřství ve třech románech současné italské spisovatelky Eleny Ferrante. Úvodní kapitoly se soustředí na život autorky se záměrem předložit možnosti a prozkoumat důvody, proč Elena Ferrante zůstává anonymní. Následně je pojednáváno o autorčině vztahu k takzvané „ženské literatuře“ a k Neapoli, jejímu rodnému městu. Hlavní část práce je věnována tématu mateřství a osobnosti matky v románu L´amore molesto, přeměně osobnosti hlavní hrdinky a jejího vztahu k dětem v románu I giorni dell´abbandono a vnímání mateřství v posledním románu La figlia oscura. V závěrečné části je provedeno srovnání a poukázáno na shodné a odlišné znaky jednotlivých děl.
