Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá studiem jazykových rozdílů mezi dvěma generacemi mluvčích v románu Charlese Webba Absolvent z roku 1963. Cílem bylo zjistit, zda se jazykové prostředky generace vysokoškolských studentů liší od těch, které používá generace jejich rodičů. Druhá část výzkumu zjišťuje, do jaké míry jsou tyto rozdíly reflektovány v přirozeném jazyce. Pro výzkum byly vybrány lexikální prostředky, které se používají k vyjádření postoje mluvčího, konkrétně zvolání a nadávky, na základě studie Kristen Precht z roku 2008, a intenzifikátory, podle studie Carity Paradis z roku 2000. Výzkum byl proveden za pomoci dvou korpusů. V první části byl jako základní korpus použit text knihy Absolvent. V něm byly vytvořeny dva subkorpusy, každý složený z výpovědí jedné ze studovaných generací postav. Druhá část výzkumu využívá veřejně přístupný korpus vytvořený Markem Daviesem z Brigham Young University v USA. Tento korpus se skládá z textů amerického časopisu TIME a mapuje vývoj jazyka v období od dvacátých let dvacátého století do začátku třetího milénia.

Abstract:

This thesis studies language differences between two generations of speakers, more specifically college students and their parents, in The Graduate – a 1963 novel written by Charles Webb. The first aim was to investigate which category of lexical stance markers, namely exclamations and expletives, or degree modifiers, each of the generations preferred. The two categories of stance markers were chosen based on the studies conducted by Precht (2008) and Paradis (2000) respectively. For the purposes of this research a corpus comprising the text of the novel was created. The second parts of the research studies to what degree the lexical differences observed in the novel are reflected in natural language. The second part of the research employs the TIME Magazine Corpus, which contains texts of American English from the 1920s until the beginning of the third millennium.
