Fear of childbirth: relations and predictors

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se věnuje strachu, který prožívají ženy v průběhu těhotenství, konkrétně strachu z porodu. V teoretické části práce je rozpracován psychologický pojem strach z porodu a následně další psychologické koncepty, jejichž možná souvislost se strachem z porodu je cílem výzkumu. V empirické části práce je ověřován vztah mezi intenzitou strachu z porodu a vybranými „tvrdými“ proměnnými (věk, stádium těhotenství, porodní historie (prvo/vícerodičky, poslední porod komplikovaný/bez komplikací), existence partnerského vztahu) a psychologickými proměnnými (úzkostnost, vyhýbavost, spokojenost v partnerském vztahu, subjektivní pocit autonomie a potřeba mít partnera u porodu). Tyto vztahy jsou ověřovány na základě dat získaných od 245 respondentek prostřednictvím dotazníkových metod (WDEQ verze A, ECR-R-18, RAS, BPNS – autonomy scale). Statistickou analýzou dat byla zjištěna souvislost mezi intenzitou strachu z porodu těhotných žen a porodní historií (poslední porod komplikovaný/bez komplikací), úzkosností, vyhýbavostí, spokojeností v partnerském vztahu a subjektivním pocitem autonomie. Souvislosti s ostatními proměnnými nebyly potvrzeny. Interpretace výsledků a limity studie jsou uvedeny v diskuzi.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the fear that women experience during pregnancy, specifically with the fear of childbirth. In the theoretical part of the thesis, the psychological concept fear of childbirth is elaborated as well as other psychological concepts, whose possible association with fear of childbirth is the target of the research. In the empirical part the relationship between the intensity of the fear of childbirth and selected "hard" variables (age, stage of pregnancy, birth history (primiparous/multiparous, last delivery complicated/without complications) and the existence of a romantic relationship) and psychological variables (anxiety, avoidance, satisfaction in a romantic relationship, subjective feeling of autonomy and the need to have a partner present during the birth) is investigated. The investigation is based on the data collected from 245 participants through a questionnaire containing WDEQ version A, ECR-R-18, RAS, BPNS - autonomy scale. Through statistical analysis of the data the associations between the intensity of fear of childbirth and birth history (last delivery complicated/without complications), anxiety, avoidance, satisfaction in a romantic relationship and the subjective feeling of autonomy were found. Relationships with other variables have not been confirmed. Interpretation of results and limits of the study are presented in the discussion.
